Last week, it was Kindergarten and that was pure and utter [insert blasphemous word here].

Right now, it's 2nd graders. They aren't that bad but man! Did I used to act like this when I was in 2nd grade and a sub came? I can't remember.

The tattletailing is INSANE!!!!!!!!!!

I blame a lot of it on their parents, but the kids where I work are irresponsible, lazy, satisfied with doing just enough to get by, quitters, don't care/think about consequences, have alcohol tolerances and smokers cough as freshman, talk during the Pledge of Allegiance, drop F-bombs like it's going out of style.....and these are just a couple of examples, I could go on and on and on.

I agree the parents don't really care about the education of their kids, when the kid fails it is why did YOU fail my kid, whatever happened to the kid taking responsiblility for failing.

Just remember.... Teachers need our respect and the respect of our state government. They do a heck of a job with what they've got... and they could all use a raise.

None of the kids have those. And if they did, who cares.

Now, if they had an OU backpack on....we'd have a chat.

Amen brother to this! This must be more of a widespread problem than I thought. I see it on a daily basis, HS that is.

The wife subs and she really enjoys it. Sure you get the kids that want to acked up, thats what that little slip is for just get rid of them to the office.

She had one class that was so bad that the principal had to sit in on the whole class.

As I had mentioned before I just retired in September after 32 years with the Federal Government, and am I taking it easy, no. My wife convinced me to sub at her school (4th,5th, 6th). Well I subbed for two weeks and let me tell you, the paycheck for the two weeks was equal to one full day with the Government! I am still here but because I messed up and handled one of the class clowns rather sternly, I am now the full time I.S.S. teacher. Guess who I get, all the class clowns from all three grades. It sure does feel good though when one, just one of those kids gets his or her act together when they leave me. Yes I have now been trained on not touching any student (strangling) or worse. It is easy to lose control of your senses with some of these kids, but you learn to deal with it. Someone has to break the chain of acting up, suspension, Juvy, and later on to the big house. If I can do it, I'll be glad I came here.

That's good and all, but the problem is....THEY'LL BE BACK TO CLASS SOONER OR LATER...and it's always sooner than you can say Jack Robinson!

I used to say the same things about the kids I was teaching...until one of my high school coaches said, "We
used to say those same things about your class."

I would like to hear about the Suspension process from around the State. Here, if a student is suspended, it's virtually a three day vacation. No consequences. It used to be, when I was in HS, if you were suspended any assignments that were missed were automatic zeroes and no chances for the work to be made up. Now, no zeroes and all work is allowed to be made up. Where's the consequences in this?

And I swear, one of these kids has to have ADD. I'm no psychologist and I'm no specialist, but I know ADD when I see it. And little "Timmy" has it.

One kid has it??? Is he the only kid in your class??? Nowadays, you ain't cool unless you've been diagnosed with some sort of learning disability...it's the "in" thing, man...thought you knew!

That and you're taking meds (that's if your parents haven't stolen them and sold them on the street).

I will probably offend everyone, but I do not support children taking alot of medications for the various disorders.

No offense taken here...I don't believe in any medication for children. Medicated children will have a life of dependency and depression to look forward to.

My thoughts exactly.

Before all of these disorders and syndromes were "discovered" kids seemed to manage much better.

Growing up in the 70's, there wasn't such a thing as attention deficit disorder. If you couldn't control your behavior, there was someone (not some medicine) ready to teach you how to control it with a good butt whippin' ....whether it was a parent, teacher, principal or combination thereof. Most kids learned behavior modification the tough way...but it worked.

Amen to that. Medicating a kid is taking the easy way out in my opinion.

lepfan
10-28-2005, 02:39 PM
Medicating is not always the easy way out....don't get me wrong, I am not for medicating a child just because they have an issue....but, there is some research out there that shows that some people out there who are true ADHD people will self medicate...and their drug of choice is not always legal. I am a firm believer in using coping skills to overcome an 'issue', but in some cases medication is justified...I do believe the person (child inculded) should be in on the decision of taking meds before moving to that step. Trust me, I have seen parents put their child on meds and it do absolutley NO good, but they insist! On the other hand I have seen parents very reluctant to put their child on meds, and then it makes the world of difference in their child. I think all should not be thrown in one pot and assumed to be all the same...
