ROCKDALE - After a sluggish start, the Rockdale Tigers found their offensive stride en route to a 27-0 win over District 19-3A opponent Smithville on Friday.

Senior quarterback D.J. Marek made the most of his passes, connecting for three touchdown strikes and 133 yards.

Neither team could capitalize on its first-half drives, but Rockdale was able to make halftime adjustments and scored quickly in the third.

The first touchdown was a 27-yard pass from Marek to sophomore receiver Dennis Brooks. Two minutes later, senior running back Steven Garza rumbled 29 yards for another score to put the Tigers up 13-0.

Marek would connect with Gary Randall and Tee Richardson for two more touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Smithville did itself no favors as it was penalized 12 times for 91 yards.

Garza led the Tigers with 107 yards on 17 rushes and Marek added another 31 yards.

Richardson hauled in four catches for 41 yards and a score, and senior Casey Lane grabbed three passes for 35 yards.

Rockdale improves to 3-5 overall (2-3, 19-3A) and remains in fourth place in district action.

The Tigers travel north to Milam County rivals Cameron next week.
