View Full Version : Best Team to not Win State

I nominate the 1969 Sweetwater Mustangs, stopped by a bad call inside Estacado Matadors 35 yard line. Game was played in the "Snake Pit" so called by the Matadors. They refused to play Brownwood in Sweetwater after barely escaping the Mustangs. I don't think they have ever played a playoff game in the Bowl since.

in '82 estacado refused to meet Gainesville halfway in the playoffs. i guess maybe they have always been afraid to meet somewhere.

Much as I hate to pay tribute to our county rival:

2004 Decatur Eagles--Never made it to state final, but everybody in Texas thought they were going to win D1 with Dane, Christian & Godboldt and a solid lineup.

2001 Bridgeport Bulls. Again, not state final, but Bulls with PD & Krebs lost semis to a tremendous athletic Commerce team that did win D2 that year.

I would say whoever met Daingerfield in 83. That team would destroy almost any team in 3A....ever.

Here we go:doh: If you want to be negative, like you always are, then go and do it on a political board. If you are offended by my having fun then go cry elsewhere. If you feel the need to call someone a fool then go stand in front of a mirror. If you think you are a moderator your not.

1989 sweetwater mustangs- had the fastest guy in the state playing running back until he blew out his knee in the state quarter finals, they then lost the state semi final game (cant remember who it was).

though I would love to say my senior year in 2000 when we had a defense that gave up 28 points in the regular season (only 7 in district) and beat #1 Aledo (36-17 I think), #2 Lamesa (34-0), and pre-season #1 Everman...I would still say that the 2000 Everman team was absolutely phenomenal. We were VERY lucky to have beaten them. To a man, anybody on that team would tell you that Everman would likely have beaten us 9 times out of 10...the 1 time where we won just happened to be that night at Birdville! Everybody remembers the damage that those guys did in '01 and '02...they were just a little bit younger in '00 and still "new on the scene" as that was their 1st year in 3A.

I think the 2001 Vernon Lions had a heck of a team that didn't win state. They took out Wylie in the 1st round and it was a blow out. Then took down Aledo in a close one, but those boys took in too much cheese at Parcells like to call it and let Perryton beat them in the regional final.

They had Bernard Scott on that team with 2,400 yards rushing who went on to UCA and was the Newcomer of the year for the Gulf South Conference. They had a great QB in Chandler who played at DII Southeastern, A LB that went to Midwestern for two years and started as a freshman then transferred to Texas Tech (Zach Lamp). They also had a LB that went to Southeastern (Byers). That team was loaded with talent but just got the big head.

Perryton had a very good team also so no disrespecting them as they shut down Scott that night.

As good a team as they had...Wylie had their WORST game of the season and was definitely capable of handling Vernon. That being said...even if Vernon beats Perryton, Everman still would have lit them up for 35+ in the semis. That team was scary good!

I think everyone is missing chaingang's point here...

A couple of BH posters have really ribbed WO-S hard since their drop down to 3A... Now chaingang is doing the same thing to them, kind of like a little rivalry, I thought his post was halarious and I'm sure he wasn't really being 'serious', just going right back after them...

On the other hand, the Wharton Tigers team who played Yoakum bi-district 2004 couldn't have beaten the area Youth League champions, so I wouldn't say they were the best team to not win state...

As far as the Cuero post goes, I'd pick '75... dang good team, up 10-0 at half against Ennis... Ennis wins 13-10... I wasn't around then but have heard about some contraversy that led to Cuero's 44-game win streak coming to a close... dunno how significant the contraversy was, looks like Cuero didn't get the job done though...

That '01 team was great. The defense was anchored by that huge 6'7" lineman and a helluva DE... and you had some big, fast LBs that were able to get to the ball because they kept the other team's OLs busy. Throw in Alaniz, Charles and the hordes of skill kids you had and that team was awesome.

I never saw the '93 or '94 Cuero Gobblers, but that '95 squad you had was amazing. Clint Finley was probably the best HS player I've ever seen. Had some HUGE linemen (especially #77) who could move around and some great skill kids.

Forney in '01 was great... so was Burnet the two years they lost.

I'd imagine those Sweeney teams of the mid- and late-80's that had all the future NFL-ers were pretty dang good, too.

Judson in '98 was a pretty good team... I remember seeing 'em play Duncanville in the Astrodome... Judson was almost dominating the game when a Judson player brain-farted on a kick-off return and let the ball bounce like it was a fair-catch type deal, Duncanville picked up the ball and they rode emotions on to the championship, what a game that was...

Ahh yes, '95... Lost 17-14 to eventual State Champion Sealy in the semi's...

Clint Finley's younger brother scored the only TD against Texas this year for OU...

Maybe it's a sign that having the best QB/WR combo just doesn't get the job done in 3A. Look at Bridgeport with Daughtery/Krebs (sp), Burnet with McGee/Shipley, and Decatur with Dane/Christian. I guess I want a solid QB, WR's who can catch and block, and a solid running game (option, zone read, wishbone, i-back, one back...it doesn't matter what style) and an OL that controls the clock and keeps their defense fresh the entire game. Look at the teams that have won state recently and they all possessed these qualities.

Yah, that tall dude would have been our QB had his dad not taken the job in Arlington...

I honestly believe that most Cuero people were upset that Coach Finley left not because of his coaching skills, but because of Joe Jon ha...
