PORT ISABEL - Port Isabel tailback Marky Villarreal received a standing ovation near the end of Homecoming Night when the public-address announcer noted that he had set the Valley single-game record for rushing yards.
Villarreal amassed 403 yards on the ground, breaking the previous record of 398 set by Edinburg Economedes' Ryan Richardson last year, and helped the Tarpons defeat the Raymondville Bearkats 48-19 Friday.
Port Isabel improved to 2-1 in district and 2-5 overall. Raymondville dropped to 1-2 in district and 1-6 overall.
Villarreal was elated with breaking the record and gave credit where it was due.
"This feels so good, I can't believe I did it," said the 165-pound senior, who carried 29 times on the night and had two long runs nullified by penalty that might have put him close to an astounding 500 rushing yards. "I am still in shock. But, I have to give all the credit to my offensive line. They did an outstanding job tonight. They deserve this award also."
Villarreal was unaware that he was even close to breaking the record and becoming the first 400-yard rusher in Valley history.
"I had no idea that I was in range," he said. "I wondered what was going on when they kept giving me the ball in the third quarter. After nine straight carries, I was getting tired. But, after I heard it, it was all worthwhile."
Tarpons head coach Monty Stumbaugh was happy for his workhorse, but he was pleased with the win also.
"This is a great accomplishment for Marky," said Stumbaugh. "The record is great, but the win is big for us right now. We played well on both sides of the ball and maintained our focus early when Raymondville scored on two big plays."
Stumbaugh feels that the statistical milestone will propel his team for the rest of the season.
"This record is definitely something to build on," he said. "This will provide a big lift for us. But, even though Marky broke it, it is a team record in my eyes."
Raymondville struck first with a 52-yard touchdown pass from Carlo Dominguez (11 of 26 for 209 yards with two TDs and two INT) to Eric Conde (three receptions for 134 yards and 2 TD's) with 10:11 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.
The dynamic duo hooked up again on a 69-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter.
But, the Tarpons answered back with a 65-yard touchdown run by Villarreal and tied it at 7 with 9:54 left in the first quarter.
Villarreal scored on runs of 31 and 23 to give him three on the night.
Port Isabel added a 48-yard field goal by Victor Ramirez to put them up 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Fullback Emil Gonzalez punched it in from the one-yard line and the Tarpons were up 16-7 with 11:09 in the first half.
Then, tailback Ralph Valdez took over, scoring on runs of 3, 1, and 20.
Valdez ended up with 65 yards on 13 carries.
Raymondville scored their last touchdown of the night with a one-yard touchdown run by Manny Mata.
Villarreal said that he is going to celebrate with his big horses. "I am going to take my offensive line out to eat at a nice restaurant, not McDonald's."
