Wilber leads Rangers to first win of '05

By Oscar LeRoy
Sports Writer

The Greenwood football team saw its young quarterback come of age Friday night against Andrews.

Colton Wilber, a sophomore, rushed for 161 yards, passed for another 63, scored three touchdowns and engineered a big fourth quarter for the Rangers in a 32-14 victory against rival Andrews at J.M. King Memorial Stadium.

The win gives the Class 3A Rangers (1-3) their first of the year and drops Class 4A Andrews to 0-4 in the non-district season.

"This was a big-time confidence builder," said Wilber, whose team had 343 rushing yards.

Wilber was especially strong in the second half when he rushed for 125 yards.

"We came out ready to play and ready to get our first win. The offensive line came out and just dominated," Wilbur said. "That's the best I've run the ball since the sixth grade super bowl."

Greenwood head coach Steve Taylor said he was proud of the way Wilber stepped up.

"He made a lot of big plays," Taylor said. "We've always said that the two toughest things to stop are the spread and the option, but a lot of it depends on the guy under center making the right decisions. And he made a lot of good decisions (Friday). He's only going to keep getting better and better."

Greenwood was clinging to a 19-14 lead in the fourth quarter when it went on an 11-play, 72-yard drive. While Michael Washington capped it off with a 2-yard TD run to give Greenwood a 25-14 advantage with 5:20 remaining in the game, the Rangers lost one of their young players when sophomore Bryce Williams fell awkwardly on a run and broke his arm, according to Taylor.

The loss of Williams only inspired Wilber and the Rangers.

"When my best friend Bryce got hurt, everybody was just ready to go out and make the plays for him," Wilber said.

Just seven seconds after the Ranger score, Washington came up with another big play when he intercepted a Nathan Bryan pass at the Mustang 32. Wilber then rushed 24 yards, and a play later, had a 5-yard touchdown run to give the Rangers plenty of cushion.

"Their quarterback caught on fire," Andrews coach Blaine Springston said. "We couldn't find him when he was running those plays, he broke some tackles and did a great job."

After the Greenwood defense held Andrews to a three-and-out, the Rangers didn't take long to strike in the first quarter. On the Rangers' first possession, Justin Sebree cut to his left and went untouched 51 yards for a touchdown to put Greenwood up 7-0.

It took a while for the Andrews offense to get going, but once it did the Mustangs used a balanced attack to march 80 yards for the tying score -- a 2-yard TD pass from Bryan to Ricky Carrasco early in the second quarter.

Later in the quarter, Andrews had a third-and-1 at its own 40 but turned it over on downs. The Rangers took advantage of the favorable field position by grinding it out on the ground, culminating with a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Wilber. The Mustangs blocked the extra point attempt but the Rangers took a 13-7 lead at the half.

Andrews had an opportunity to close the gap right before the break but the Mustangs missed a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Both defenses took command early in the third quarter until Andrews put together a lengthy drive late in the period but stalled at the Greenwood 10-yard line. Unfortunately, the Mustangs again came away empty as they missed a 27-yard field goal.

"We missed two field goals and when you get inside the red zone twice and don't score it hurts," Springston said.

Again Greenwood capitalized on an Andrews missed opportunity when Wilber broke past the line of scrimmage and raced 60 yards for a TD. The Rangers went for two but the run was stopped short of the goal line. Greenwood led 19-7.

Andrews was not going to go away quietly, however, as the Mustangs went to the air behind the arm of Bryan. The senior quarterback completed his first pass of the second half with a 45-yard throw to Eddie Bueno. Two plays later, Bryan found Michael Grady for a 24-yard TD to pull to within 19-14.

Knew it was just a matter of time before that kid catches fire. He is going to be pretty good in the near future. Good job last night Greenwood.

You're talkin about losing to two pretty good teams in 3A. Sweetwater is currently ranked 3rd, and playing great football. As for Greenwood, Andrews just happen to catch them as they got going. Greenwood actually did pretty well against a very good Snyder team last weekend, gave Snyder all they could handle. As I said earlier, it was just a matter of time before these guys caught fire.
