State makes Interstate 45 one-way to help Rita evacuees leaving Houston area
As Texas Gulf Coast residents squeeze onto north and westbound highways to escape Hurricane Rita, the Texas Department of Transportation has made all lanes of Interstate 45 one way — the largest reversal of traffic in Texas history.
The agency has not done the same for U.S. 290 — which connects Houston and Austin — and Interstate 10, the main route from Houston to San Antonio.
