I tend to agree with you on this...I am not a fan of turf either.

Isn't the softball field at UT grass?

As long as Augie is there, the turf will stay. It's an advantage to UT and it caters to his type of ball that he coaches. While you may think it's 2nd rate, it's one of the reasons Texas has the best home record in the NCAA.

I'm not sure that I really agree that it fits his game. He prefers to play a lot of "small ball" using the bunt to move runners over is a staple of his offense. The turf would leave to a ball that takes a higher and farther bounce than on grass and wouldn't this give fielders more time to get to the ball and make the play? I guess having the turf baselines though is definitely an advantage though. Maybe they should get crazy like Tech's field and resod the infield area with grass and then leave astroturf along the basepaths and in the outfield. Then not only do his guys get the faster turf...but they have the grass to deaden their bunts as well. Now they would just have to have convertable shoes that allow them to take their spikes out quickly between innings if they were in the infield!

Well seeing as how he's quoted as saying "the turf will stay as long as I'm here", I think it fits what he's teaching just fine.

And his 2 NC's (and crazy home record) speak for itself as well.

;)
