Good one, lepfan.

3afan2k3, the reason a lot of people on here lately have been eating crow is because so many have been over-zealous in their predictions of winners each week. I try not to make predictions, because I don't care for the taste of crow. Basically, I don't want to have to say to everyone on here, "Hey, I made a complete idiot of myself and now it's time for all of you to make fun of me because of it". eek!

The saying gets on your nerves? I know, but it's been around forever. Maybe the next time someone has this problem, instead they should post, "Hey, I made a complete idiot of myself and now it's time for all of you to make fun of me because of it". wink

The origin of "to eat crow" is ultimately unknown. Almost all authorities cite an incident that took place during a truce in the war of 1812. The story goes that an unarmed British officer encountered an American hunter near the Niagra River, gained control of his musket and thereby forced him to eat the crow he had just shot. The American complied, but when his musket was returned, forced the British officer to do the same.

The first recorded "in context" citation (where "eating crow" is associated with humiliation) occurred 1877, where it is "to eat boiled crow".
