Sweetwater makes move in 3A poll

District 4-3A may still dominate The Associated Press' Class 3A high school football poll, but the district's top team is no longer a Tiger.

Sweetwater High School leapfrogged over Snyder High School in the 3A poll released Monday to take the No. 3 spot. The Mustangs, who have scored an average of 40 points per game while allowing just five points a contest, also grabbed three first-place votes.

Sweetwater coach Kent Jackson said seeing two fellow 4-3A teams alongside his Mustangs in the poll each week shows just how far each of those teams will have to go to make it to that ''final poll'' that matters.

''There are four games that matter,'' Jackson said. ''If you don't win those, if you don't get in (the playoffs), you don't have a chance to get in that final poll.''

Jackson said the goal for the Mustangs is to keep getting better each week because come district play - as the poll points out - Sweetwater, Snyder and Wylie will be in for a fight.

''We see things on Saturday,'' Jackson said, referring to film sessions the day after each game. ''You give the kids something tangible each week to look at and say, 'Let's get better at that.'''

And while being ranked is something Sweetwater fans can take pride in, Jackson said the best motivation for his team is knowing the tough district schedule that awaits.

''It's a built-in motivator,'' Jackson said. ''There is not a night off.''
