View Full Version : Hurricane Rita & 3A Down Low

Administrator
09-20-2005, 06:33 PM
Hello everyone,
As most of you already know, the 3A Down Low server is located in Beaumont. Hurricane Rita has the possibility to grow into a monsterous Category 4 hurricane, and although is expected to make landfall about 100 miles to our Southwest, our area will not escape some high winds and extremely heavy rain. The current forecast shows that winds in the Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange/Bridge City areas will be in the 50-70mph range. This will cause widespread power outages in the Golden Triangle area. The server is on a battery backup that will last several hours, and we have rented a generator to help power the most needed equipment at our office where the server is located. I can not promise that 3A Down Low is going to be part of the high priority systems, as we have over 50 machines, and will be having to shut down over half of them after the power fails. The only generator I was able to find for our company is small, but it will serve its purpose to keep the high priority systems in order. If I am able to keep 3ADL operational on Friday/Saturday with the generator, I will do so. Expect frequent outages to occur though. I will continue to update everyone regarding this situation as the week progresses.

I'm sorry but the media likes to blow things outta proportion. Although I do believe this is a strong storm, but for some reason I just don't think its gonna demolish "6000,000 homes." Katrina was a big case of stupidity and the fact it was below sea level. Galveston would be in big trouble which is where I'm living currently. I will say though that I do have peeps in prayers along w/ my apartment (hopefully it wont be among those "6000,000 homes") But hopefully things will be alright and it seems everyone is much more prepared than New Orleans. But anyways, everyone take care and btw i was just messing w/ the poster who accidentally wrote 6000,000.

Rita moving west at 14 mph. The good news is she picked up speed overnight and hopefully this will continue. If this continues looks like landfall Saturday between Matagorda and Freeport. I believe most games in this area have been cancelled.

We're going to ride it out here. Unfortunately, we came back from our weekend tubing trip to New Braunfels to discover the home PC had crashed, and right now isn't the best time to worry about getting it fixed. I had wanted to post updates on the storm and it's affects on my area as it made landfall but it looks like it won't happen. I'll have to give ya'll the details later...:mad:

I'm not sure if they have opened southbound yet on 45. They have had a lot of construction around that area. I left Galveston yesterday and it was slow with just students evacuating. Our A&M campus down there had to evacuate before 5 and the traffic wasn't all that great b/c of the construction. They seem to have it well organized, though, down there so things should be alright. Hopefully we don't have any "brave idiots" that try to fight out the storm. Ole College station should be full to capacity with all the galveston people and so on. To top it off the aggie game is now tommorrow so everything is just happened at once.

DROPSONDE DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RESERVE UNIT RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT AT 623 PM CDT...2323Z...INDICATED THE CENTRAL PRESSURE HAS FALLEN TO BELOW 899 MB...OR 26.55 INCHES. THE DROPSONDE INSTRUMENT MEASURED 32 KT/35 MPH WINDS AT THE SURFACE...WHICH MEANS IT LIKELY DID NOT RECORD THE LOWEST PRESSURE IN THE EYE OF RITA. THE CENTRAL PRESSURE IS PROBABLY AT LEAST AS LOW AS 898 MB...AND PERHAPS EVEN LOWER. FOR OFFICIAL PURPOSES... A PRESSURE OF 898 MB IS ASSUMED... WHICH NOW MAKES RITA THE THIRD MOST INTENSE HURRICANE IN TERMS OF PRESSURE IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN. SOME ADDITIONAL DEEPENING AND INTENSIFICATION IS POSSIBLE FOR THE NEXT 12 HOURS OR SO.

RITA CURRENTLY RANKS BEHIND HURRICANE GILBERT IN 1988 WITH 888 MB AND THE 1935 LABOR DAY HURRICANE WITH 892 MB.

Tuesday Night Update:
As of right now, the forecast still shows the storm going into the same area. We are still expected to have up to 80MPH wind gusts, with sustained winds between 50-80. *IF* this thing makes ANY further jogs up to the North and ends up making landfall around Galveston, Beaumont will experience 120-130 MPH. As the storm gets closer to landfall, I will make my own personal decision on rather or not I will be leaving town and taking the server with me. If this happens, I will try my best to get the database uploaded to ANOTHER server from my safe location in East Texas.. The 4A Site will NOT be affected by the possible outages, as it is not on the server that 3A Down Low is, and is hosted off site in some other state.

As of 1AM, there are at least TWO models showing a direct hit at Sabine Pass, which would put the Golden Triangle in the 150+MPH Zone. I will make my decision tomorrow evening on rather or not I will be leaving.. If I do leave, the server will go offline sometime tomorrow evening.. I will try to forward the site to a placeholder informing everyone that the site is temporarily down. At the time of the outage, feel free to post on the 4A site located at http://www.texaaaasports.com --- If I end up taking this server online, I will create a temporary section on the 4A site for 3ADL.. Keep an eye on the direction of movement. If the hurricane continues to drift to the north or west northwest, South Texas will escape it's wrath. Current center of the cone is just northeast of Galveston, and I'm figuring that to be the High Island area. Bridge City, Beaumont, Port Arthur and Orange will bear a heavy hit if the path continues as projected.

Chain,

I sure hope the Traingle did not wait to see what this thing was going to do. You may very well end up inside the eye with us, or even on a dirtier side of the storm. Houston is not scheduled to start shifting traffic to one way on North bound roads until 10:00 AM, which is probably 12 hours to late. That may take formt eh resources to create one way traffic out of the Golden Triangle area.

My father is head of the emergency management in Orange County and he's worried $&*^less! He says that the Golden triangle will be in very very very bad shape! Possible total loss. He said everything south of I10 in Orange county will be under water if this thing stays on course with the intensity staying the same also. I live in Lafayette and they are talking about evac. I cant believe this far east. I think they are worried that the eye could hit the Texas/LA border which could even wipe us out. Wehave nowhere to go. So ill just pray for my family's safety.

But they did wait! Look at this excerpt:
================================
Jefferson County Judge Carl Griffith has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the entire county.
Judge Griffith says it will be a staggered evacuation. There is already a mandatory evacuation order taking effect at 6 a.m. for Sabine Pass. Port Arthur will be evacuated beginning at 8 a.m. followed by Mid County at 10 a.m. and Beaumont at noon.

================================

2 hours per "stagger" is not enough time to make any real difference out on the highways. I can't believe Sabine Pass is just now this morning getting evacuation orders.

Gosh, even southern Jasper/Newton counties are being evacuated:

MANDATORY EVACUATION NOTICE

At 8:00a.m. this morning Jasper County Judge Joe Folk has ordered the mandatory evacuation of the southern end of Jasper County from a point south of Farm Road 82 which is on the south side of Kirbyville. All residents should follow the traffic management plan and travel north on U.S. Highway 96 to the shelter information center located in Shelby County.

At 8:00a.m. this morning Newton County Judge Truman Dougharty has ordered the mandatory evacuation of the southern end of Newton County from a point south of Farm Road 253. All residents should follow the traffic management plan and travel north on State Highway 87 to the shelter information center located in Shelby County.

There will not be any shelters opened in Jasper or Newton Counties.

My father just told me the worst case scenario has evolved for Jefferson and Orange counties. The storm is now predicted to hit Sabine pass directly. This would put orange county under water well north of I10!!!!!!!!! Here in Lafayette we are under a voluntary evac and Vermillion Parish about 10 miles south of us is under a Mandatory!! I'll keep watching, but now I can't (or won't) go to Dallas. I have family way out in Stanton/Midland/Sweetwater and that is about an 8 hour drive w/o traffic so that just doesn't seem like a very good option right now.

I'll keep on eye closed & the other on TWC.

Hey P4S and 44 I just met some people at Dollar General from Port Aransas who were coming to Sinton to get away from the storm. They decided to go ahead and go to Poteet where they have relatives rather than stay at a local hotel.
