What the heck do these things eat? They're nothing but a nuisance! Where did these things originate from? Do you think this is was a conspiracy by car wash owners to create these stupid things so they can rake in some cash? haha...but seriously these things suck...i hate them...

What the heck do these things eat?

I think they have a steady diet of windshield...

My mother-in-law calls them hurricane bugs because they come out at the beginning and at the end of hurricane season. I just call them a pain in the rear. They're not so bad here, but I traveled to Tioga last week, and between Crockett and Palestine, they were horrible! In points, they were hitting the windshield in swarms and it sounded like rain. I doubt any of them have the guts to do that again, though...

1988 was certainly the worst season for love bugs. Phil can you confirm this?

these love bugs travel in pairs, you hardly never see one by themselves...and they stink when you wash them off your car...sometimes they can just swarm you, but they don't bite...

Don't they mess up the paint on your vehicles if you do not wash them off?

Best solution is baking soda and soap. It washes right off.

From what I have heard, the "love bugs" were brought here from Brazil to help with the mosquito problem. I think I could deal with skitters better. And when hubby ran a service station, we would have folks from up north come through and just fuss about them. BTW, lovebugs seem to flock to the color white. OUr service station was painted white, and just attracted them little critters like crazy.

Last year was just a huge love-bug orgy down here... how gross it was...

Yah, think ex is right about 'em eating mosquitos, that may be why the skeeters are worse here this year, not any love-bugs here this year...

Last year was cool because if you were up in the hill country you could tell if someone had been at the coast, they stood out with all of those bugs all over their cars...

For those who haven't "experienced" love bugs:

Video (http://cricket.biol.sc.edu/htdocs2/htdocs2/love-swarm-5.MPG) of a swarm.

Here's a close up pic of a pair. Pay no attention to the scale. They aren't an inch long. Maybe that's centimeters?

Love Bugs (they aren't true bugs, they are dipterans) do not eat skeeters. They spend most of their lives as larva eating rotten leaves. They only grow wings when its time to join the Mile High Club, so to speak. I guess the easiest way to describe them is like this:

Thorax almost completely rufous, rarely slightly brownish black on metathoracic pleura; head with oral margin not produced forward, but evenly convex. Male genitalia with 9th tergum much broader than in nearctica, almost twice as broad as long, with a deep medial excavation and without a ventromedial flap, ventrolateral corners produced posteriorly; 9th sternum with a dorsolateral lobe, not produced ventromedially and without a medial forked process, but with a broad ventromedial excavation; telemeres small, almost completely round. Female genitalia with 9th tergum small, not concealing cerci in lateral view, not excavated medially; cerci large, broad in dorsal view; 8th sternum large, with a deep and narrow medial excavation; ovipositor lobes narrow, acute apically, not strongly sclerotized dorsally.

See? Its so simple.....
