Bess Clemens, the mother of Astros pitcher Roger Clemens, died early today due to complications from emphysema, which she had fought for several years.

"Roger intends to pitch tonight with a heavy heart in honor of his mother, Bess Clemens," read a statement released through the Astros by the Roger Clemens Foundation.

Bess Clemens raised Roger in the Houston area, but she had spent the last few years in Georgetown.

Clemens, who made his last start against the Brewers on Friday night, had been excused from the team in recent days to be at his mother's side. She died about 4:30 a.m. today.

Clemens, 43, is 11-7 with a 1.78 ERA in his 22nd major-league season. He put off retirement last season to join his hometown Astros. He often said he wanted to retire early enough so his mother could be at his eventual Hall of Famer induction. Players must wait five years after they retire to become eligible for the Hall of Fame .

"In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the U.S. C.O.P.D (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Coalition, in care of the Roger Clemens Foundation, 230 Westcott, Houston, Texas, 77007," read the statement released by Clemens' foundation.
