The Bulldogs took their game on the road again this past Friday night to take on the 4A University Trojans in Brownwood as part of the The Gordon Wood Classic.

The game turned out to be a little easier than the LaVega Game as the 'Dogs ran all over the Trojans by a score of 41-17 to pick up their 2nd win of the season.

University won the toss and elected to receive. After a deep kick-off to the 5 by Craig Contreras, Trojan Parrish Cox took the ball, followed blockers and headed down the far side line, breaking free and heading to the end zone for an apparent 95 yard TD run.

However, Marlin defender Jeremy Sanders, showing his speed, came from the other side of the field and ran down Cox at the 5. Three plays later, the Trojans managed only 4.5 yards, setting up a forth and inches. However, letting the 25 second clock run out, the Trojans took the five yard penalty and settled for a 22-yard field goal by Ismeal Benitez.

The 'Dogs got the first possession of the ball on offense. With Sanders pinpoint passing, hitting four for seven for 57-yard on the opening drive, and his quickness running the ball, four for 24-yard, the 'Dogs scored. The last four yards came on a pass to Dominique Jones. Contreras extra point was good. With 4:49 left to play in the first, the 'Dogs were up 7-3.

The 'Dogs then kicked deep once again to the waiting arms of Parrish, who returned it for 38 yards up the middle to the Trojan 48. However, the Trojans could not muster anything, and the first quarter ended.

In the second quarter, the Trojans regained the lead as QB Justin Gill found Cox again on a 16-yard TD pass. Benitez added the point after to make 10-7 University. However, that would be the last scoring for the Trojans until a late TD in the final quarter.

The 'Dogs came out barking with 4:42 left in the half as sophomore Travis Miller got in the scoring column with a 5-yard run. The extra point was no good, but the 'Dogs took the lead for good at 13-10.

With 40 seconds left in the half, Sanders electrified the crowd with a 62-yard run for a touch down. The two point conversion failed and the 'Dogs took a 19-10 lead to the lockers.

In the second half, Sanders went back to the air. After a 27-yard run by Kevin Diles, Sanders hit Denario Alexander with an 11-yard pass to make the score 25-10. Contreras' extra point made it 26-10. The 'Dogs covered 77 yards in 3 plays, the only scoring in the third quarter.

In the final period, Contreras showed is leg strength when he hit a 37 yard field goal to take the 'Dog lead to 29-10. Then, with 9:15 left to play, Contreras again came in for a 32 yard field goal attempt. However, the snap was a little high and Alexander, the holder, had to improvise - 15 yards later he was in the end zone and the score became 35-10 'Dogs.

The Trojans had their last taste of the end zone with 3:38 left to play, as Antoine Taylor scored from 21-yards out . The point after with good, and the score became 35-17.

The 'Dogs final score came with 57 seconds remaining in the game. Kevin Diles put the moves on and scored from 28 yards out. Final score 'Dogs 41, Trojans 17.

The 'Dog defense completely shut down the Trojans in the second half. Take away the 21 yard TD run by Taylor, the Trojans had only 54 rushing yards, and Gill was only one-for-four in the passing for 10 yards with 2 INTS, one by Sanders and one by Alexander.

Next up, the 'Dogs come home to take on Bellville Brahmas this Friday night at Legion Field. Kick off at 7:30 pm.
