The Louisiana Superdome was so heavily damaged during Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath that it likely will have to be torn down, according to a spokesperson for Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco.

Katrina sheared away much of the roof's covering, and rainwater began leaking into the stadium when it was being used as a shelter of last resort for thousands of residents stranded by the storm.

The Superdome is the home of the New Orleans Saints professional football team. The NFL season begins this weekend, and it is not clear where the Saints will play.

It's about 3 paragraphs down from the top:

I am not sure what year the Super Dome was built. I think the Super Dome was the second indoor stadium to be built, second only to the Astrodome in Houston.

I can assure you that the Superdome doesn't NEED to be torn down. It is designed to withstand 200 mph winds. There is nothing wrong with it other than the roof was torn off a part of it and the inside looks like a trash dump. New Orleans would be playing in it if it weren't for Katrina. Does it need a major renovation? Probably. Do the owners WANT a new stadium? Absolutely. You don't tear down your house because a hail storm ruins your roof. Even if you need new carpet and central A/C.
The people in charge have been waiting for a chance to find some reason for a new stadium. Now they have it.
