I remember talkin to a few people about this (dont remember who it was though) but for anybody interested this Saturday is the Annual Kolache Festival in Caldwell. It's pretty cool! There are different little bands playing, a hot rod show, lots of stuff for kids to do and the best part LOTS OF KOLACHES, not to mention turkey legs funnel cakes roasted corn and tons of beer (for you beer people) If yall are around and have nothing to do you should check it out!

Kolache's are a breakfast food...kinda like a pig in a blanket but it has a sweet, roll like bun around it instead of the biscuit stuff....but it doesnt have to have a sausage in it....kolaches are mainly made w/ either sausage or ham, and cheese is put in there often too.....however u can put just about anything inside of a kolache, bacon and cheese is good but ihave had them w/ BBQ, jalapenos, and tons of other things...

BONUS QUESTION - what is the "official" name of the topping (the sweet stuff) drizzled on top of the Kolaches?

I am talking about the fruity type Kolaches. ie Cherry, Dew Berry, Poppy Seed, Peach, Prune etc

I guess you could use syrup -but the recipe I have calls it: POSIPKA -
1 CUP SUGAR
1/2 CUP FLOUR
2 TBSP MELTED BUTTER.
Combine the ingredients and sprinkle on top of the kolache before baking :)

Probably best commercial place to buy is Hruska's in Ellinger between La Grange and Columbus.

Kolache's are usually poppy seed, cottage cheese, apricot, cherry, peach and pineapple.

This recipe is probably the closest to what my mother used to make.

http://www.rtis.com/reg/caldwell/czech/poppy.htm

Like an idiot, I never got my mother's recipe. Making these takes at least 4 hours.
