Mustangs shut down Chiefs
By RON HOWELL/Reporter Sports Editor

SAN ANGELO -- Football can be a very unpredictable game. Just ask any coach who's been at it awhile.

But there weren't many surprises when the state's No. 7-ranked team in Class 3A -- Sweetwater -- traveled to San Angelo on Friday to face a Class 4A Lake View team which had nothing go right in its 2005 season opener against another 3A heavyweight, Abilene Wylie, the previous week.

There were no surprises, that is, unless Lake View fans were expecting to see a much better team on the field for the Chiefs' home opener.

What they saw, though, was another remarkable display of Sweetwater's superior talent and depth in a 40-0 win that was amazingly similar to Wylie's 41-0 victory against Lake View in Week 1.

Some other similarities be-sides the final score?

Wylie rolled up a 392-24 edge in total yards against the Chiefs; Sweetwater out-gained Lake View 439-43. Wylie ran for 252 yards and passed for 140; Sweetwater rushed for 301 yards and threw for 138. Wylie had a 19-3 edge in first downs; Sweetwater had 21 first downs to Lake View's 4.

Finally, Wylie led the Chiefs 34-0 at halftime and tacked on just seven more points in the second half; Sweetwater built a 35-0 halftime cushion and had just five more points after inter-mission. The Mustangs did that on an 18-yard Parker Morrow field goal when Sweetwater decided against going for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1, and on a safety called on the Chiefs for holding in the end zone.

Coach Kent Jackson got plen-ty of playing time for everyone on both sides of the ball. Nine-teen different players had tackles in the game, while the Mus-tangs' Wishbone offense had 12 different ball carriers.

Quarterback Sonny Birdwell led Sweetwater with 53 yards rushing on just two carries, one of them a 46-yard touchdown jaunt in the second quarter. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 pas-sing for 51 yards. The other two QBs in the game, Kendal Car-rillo and Duone Cunnings, were just as effective.

Carrillo rushed for 47 yards, including a 24-yard TD a few minutes after Birdwell's score, and completed 5 of 6 passes for 79 yards. Cunnings ran for 45 yards on five attempts and was successful on his only pass.

Joseph Banyard and Skye Green also made their presence felt. Green scored Sweetwater's first two touchdowns on runs of 4 and 1 yards in the first quarter. Banyard had a 17-yard run for the Mustangs' final touch-down, making it 35-0 with less than a minute (48.7 seconds) to play in the first half. He was al-so a terror on defense (see box) from his linebacker position with a team-high nine tackles, two for a loss, one sack and a fumble recovery. Carrillo and Brandan Fangman were also credited with fumble recoveries and Fangman and Harold Ten-non each had three sacks. Oth-ers getting sacks in the game were Ty Jones, James Beckwith and Justin Adames.

"A lot of the kids are really contributing," said Jackson. "That's what you want. The youngsters are getting a lot of reps."

Brittan Pittman led Mustang receivers with four catches for 75 yards, including a spectacu-lar 32-yard reception to start an ill-fated series in the first quar-ter that ended with a lost fumble at Lake View's 12 on the very next play.

Sweetwater also missed on some other chances, failing to reach the end zone on a third-quarter drive that got to the 1 and resulted in Morrow's short field goal, and coughing it up on another fumble at Lake View's 6 later in the period. On their last series, which started at Sweetwater's 32 after an ap-parent Carrillo punt return for a touchdown was wiped out by a penalty, the Mustangs drove to the Chiefs' 22 before taking a knee on their last two snaps.

Sweetwater is back home this Friday to face Midland Green-wood in the inaugural Sammy Baugh Classic, which runs Sept. 8-10 at Mustang Bowl.

Is it just me, or was this a crack at Lake View....or are they just that bad!:(

Good win for both clubs though......need some better foes IMHO!
