Fort Stockton holds on for its first victory

FORT STOCKTON Alfredo Agredano raced 84 yards on a punt return to trigger a 21-point first half outburst, then broke up two-point conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter to salvage the Fort Stockton Panthers 28-26 win over Class 4A El Paso Burges in a non-district battle at Panther Stadium.
The win, which evened Fort Stockton’s preseason mark at 1-1, was the first for new coach Tom Howard, who took over a Panthers program that advanced to the playoffs in 2004. El Paso Burges fell to 1-1.
Quarterback J.J. Hickman raced 50 yards for a touchdown and hooked up with Colby Terrazas on a 19-yard TD toss as the Panthers ran out to a 21-0 lead.
From then on, it was hang on until Agredano swatted away a pass on two-point conversion attempt to save the win.
