DESOTO – It took no less than five overtimes for DeSoto to outlast Garland, 56-50, in a wild marathon Friday night.

When it was finally over, the DeSoto players celebrated wildly in front of their green-gold fans in their mostly-finished, renovated Eagle Stadium.

DeSoto, No. 13 in SportsDay's Class 5A area rankings, finally won it when Clevell Jordan pushed over the goal line in the fifth overtime. DeSoto got its chance to win when it intercepted a Garland pass at the start of the fifth period.

The teams traded touchdowns in the first two overtimes.

No. 2-ranked Garland (1-1) fumbled in the third overtime, but DeSoto (1-1) couldn't convert on a 36-yard field-goal attempt.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the fourth overtime and were required to go for two-point conversions. Both made it.

DeSoto quarterback Terrance Wilkerson rushed for 144 yards, passed for 88 and accounted for four touchdowns. Lamonte Jordan got most of the carries in overtime.

Dante Sloan rushed for 148 yards and two touchdowns for Garland, and Malcolm Williams scored three touchdowns.

Garland twice came back from 14-point deficits to force the overtime.

The score was tied at 14 at half, but DeSoto took control again with two touchdown passes.

Garland appeared to blow its chance when it fumbled twice in the last seven minutes of regulation, but Williams scooped up an ensuing DeSoto fumble for a touchdown.

DeSoto snapped the ball over the punter's head and Garland recovered on its 7. Sloan pushed in the ball with 1:59 remaining to tie the game and force the overtime.
