Buses filled with Hurricane Katrina evacuees from New Orleans are headed to Corpus Christi, officials confirmed Friday afternoon.

Mayor Henry Garrett said victims were being air-evacuated out of New Orleans and flown to San Antonio, where they then will be bused to Corpus Christi.

"We’ve been coordinating with the governor’s office," Garrett said.

Garrett said the city can handle about 3,000 people immediately and possibly accommodate up to 7,000.

He said evacuees will be housed at Memorial Coliseum and possibly at closed Corpus Christi Independent School District elementary schools.

"We’re talking to CCISD about using Solomon Coles and Lamar elementary schools," Garrett said.

Bishop Edmond Carmody said Knights of Columbus Halls also are being considered and could house up to 1,000.
