Marlin sqeaks by LaVega in double overtime thriller
BY TOM SIMPSON, Bulldog Correspondent

LEAPS TALL BUILDINGS - Kevin Diles intercepts a Pirate pass in the end zone to kill Pirates drive in first of two overtime periods during the Heart 'O Texas Classic in Waco.
The rain held off in the distance at Waco ISD Stadium Saturday night and the Bulldogs held on to win their first game of the season in the final game of the Heart of Texas Kick Off Classic by downing the La Vega Pirates 27-21 in double overtime.

This really was a classic as the number one team in the state, Marlin, took on a 0-10 Pirates from last year. On paper one would think this was going to be another blow out. Last year the 'Dogs prevailed over the Pirates 34-6.

But this time the Pirates were not going down so easy.

After the 'Dogs were flagged for delay of game to get started the next kick-off sailed out of bounds and the Pirates took over at their own 35 yard line. La Vega had to establish a running game and time consuming drives to keep Bulldog #7 off the field. On their first drive they did just that. Behind the power running of Jeff Jefferson, the Pirates ate up all but three minutes of the first quarter and drove down the field with Jefferson scoring from two yards out. With the point after, the Pirates were up 7-0.

The 'Dogs took the ensuing kickoff, and after 3 plays and 51 seconds scored as Jeremy Sanders found Kenny Evans wide open for a 60 yard catch and run score. Craig Contreras added the extra point to tie the game at seven.

In the second quarter, the Marlin defense rose up and shut the Pirates down to a meager nine yards rushing.

The 'Dogs took the lead with 8:44 left in the half as Sanders hit Benny Jones along the near side lines for a 15 yard touchdown. PAT by Contreras was good, and the 'Dogs took a 14-7 lead to the lockers.

Sanders had a great first half by completing 7/10 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

In the second half the Pirates showed they weren't going away.

With their ground game squandered, QB Vincent Williams took to the air and found Joe Sanders for a 38-yard touchdown pass to bring the Pirates to within one with 4:30 left in the third quarter. The point after was no good, though it was in question.

The hike was mishandled and the holder threw the ball towards the end zone, but a line man caught it and rumbled to the end zone. The refs ruled ineligible receiver and the two point conversion was no good. The 'Dogs held a one point lead at 14-13.

The 'Dogs answered with a sustained drive of their own with Jazz Thomas taking the ball into the end zone from 7 yards out to put the 'Dogs up 21-13.

Down eight, the Pirates started their final drive at their own ten yard line. On a third and nine Williams connected with Sanders for a 41-yard completion that kept the drive alive. The Pirates went to a running game, and were soon knocking at the door at the Marlin one yard line.

QB Williams took it in to bring the Pirates to within two. The two point conversion attempt to tie the game was a success as Williams faked a handoff to Jefferson and threw to a wide open Sanders on the near side to tie the game, 21-21 with only 2:33 to play in regulation.

The Bulldogs couldn't get anything going on their next possession and were forced to punt from their end zone into the wind. The Pirates got the ball in Bulldog territory, but they too couldn't muster anything, and the game went into overtime.

The first OT saw neither team move the ball and a second overtime ensued.

The Pirates took the ball first and on a third down play they fumbled and the 'Dogs snuffed the Pirates' chance to score.

This time the 'Dog offense wasted no time in getting the job done. On first and ten from the 25, Sanders faked a pass to the right side, turned and lofted the ball toward the left corner of the end zone where Benny Jones out-leaped the smaller defender. He held on long enough for the referee to signal touchdown. The game ended 27-21.

The 'Dogs travel to Brownwood to take on the University Trojans this Friday at 7:30 PM.
