AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas pitcher Adrian Alaniz will be a featured speaker at "Gone to Texas", which begins at 8 p.m. Central on the Main Mall in front of the UT Tower on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

A native of Sinton, Texas, Alaniz will represent the over 700 student-athletes at UT during the "Gone to Texas" program.

The event, which is sponsored by the University Co-op, is put on by The University to welcome the school's newest students to the UT community prior to the start of fall classes on Wednesday, Aug. 31. While numerous members of the campus community will speak to these first-year Longhorns, including Alaniz, the evening will also have processions of colleges and schools to the Main Mall, a variety of vocal and dancing performances, a flag drop and a grand finale featuring the Longhorn Band and cheerleaders.

A 2005 Freshman All-American, Alaniz went 8-3 with a 2.67 ERA over 16 starts last season for Texas as the Longhorns posted a 56-16 overall record en route to capturing their sixth national title. Additionally, Alaniz, who registered 94 strikeouts over his 108 innings of work during 23 appearances last year, tossed the 19th no-hitter in school history on April 16, 2005, against Oklahoma.

Yeah, he's a great kid. I don't know much about this deal, but it sounds like quite an honor if they asked him to represent all the athletes at UT.

I believe 'Gone to Texas' is kind of a celebration/introduction to freshmen entering their first year at UT...
