Sinton cruises to win over Taft
Balanced Pirates' offense too much for Greyhounds

By RUDY RIVERA Special to Caller-Times
August 27, 2005

TAFT - The Sinton Pirates used a solid ground game by Josh Ring and some good passing from Daniel Ramirez to race to a 53-0 win over the Taft Greyhounds on Friday night.

Ring was the workhorse for Sinton as he finished with 180 yards rushing on 12 carries - 116 of the yards came in the first half on just seven carries.

Meanwhile, Ramirez passed for 146 yards, completing 11 of 24 passes, four for touchdowns.

Meanwhile the Pirates defense was swarming as it held the Greyhounds to 105 yards of total offense for the night.

The Pirates took advantage of excellent field position all night long, capitalizing on four Taft turnovers to score.

Sinton took advantage of some Greyhound miscues early on, including a blocked punt to race to a 27-0 halftime edge. The Pirates jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first with 7:50 left when Steven Burk hauled in 5-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Ramirez.

The Pirates extended their lead in the quarter when Cruz Aranda broke a couple of tackles to score from five yards out with 5:35 remaining in the first.

Ramirez kept the ball on the conversion and the Pirates were up 14-0 after one.

In the second, Ramirez got the Pirates in the end zone, this time keeping the ball and going in untouched, the kick failed but Sinton led 20-0.

The Pirates made it 27-0 when Chris Goetzel pulled down an 18-yard scoring pass from Ramirez, making the score 28-0 after one half of play.

Burk opened the second half with an 81-yard kickoff return that broke the Greyhounds' back, making the score 34-0, 15 seconds into the half. Later in the quarter, Isaac Rendon was the recipient of a 20-yard shuttle pass from Ramirez stretching the lead to 40-0.

The Pirates closed the scoring in the third when Amdon Castillo bolted up the middle from seven yards out, Jason Garcia added the extra point and Sinton was up 47-0.

The final Sinton score came on the fourth TD pass by Ramirez as he found Chris Goetzel open from six yards out.

Taft tried to use a spread offense for much of the night, but found the going tough against the Pirates defense.

Julian Aparicio passed for 73 yards on the night, but could not get the Greyhounds in the end zone.

Interesting enough, he kicked a 37 yard field goal last week. I'm fairly sure he'll get there.

It will come district with time. Be not deceived everyone. As I said the Pirates won and good job! The game was much tougher than than the final scored indicated. It was close for a while there too.
