GAINESVILLE - Gainesville defeated Scotts Valley (Calif.) 33-0 Friday at Gainesville's Leeper Stadium in a game dubbed the Sizzle Bowl by the two schools.
Gainesville (1-0) jumped out to a 16-0 lead and added two second half touchdowns. Their defense limited Scotts Valley to just 80 total yards. Scotts Valley fumbled on their first offensive play of the game and Gainesville took advantage two plays later as Michael Miller scored on a 3-yard run. Miller also ran in the two point conversion to make it 8-0
just 36 seconds into the game.
Gainesville had a 36-yard touchdown pass called back on their next offensive possesion, but they did score the third time they had the ball as Jacob West ran a quarterback keeper into the end zone from eight yards out. Gainesville went for two again and West connected with Collin Sikes on a pass to put GHS ahead 16-0.
Neither team scored in the second quarter, but Gainesville went up 23-0 in the third quarter when Sikes threw a 41-yard bomb to Yusef Stevenson.
In the fourth quarter, Arenas nailed a 27 yard field goal and Casey Martin had a 26-yard interception return for a score for the final Gainesville points. The final score could have been worse, but Gainesville had another touchdown in the second half negated by a penalty.
The game was reportedly just the seventh time that a Texas football team had played a team from California.
