Players to watch: Colorado City, RB/DB Roland Rivera (5-6, 150, Sr.), WR/LB Frankie Arguijo (5-10, 165, Sr.), TE/LB Tim Atkins (6-0, 180, Sr.); Fort Stockton, QB J.J. Hickman (5-11, 170, Sr.), C Octavio Contreras (5-8, 190, Sr.)

Notables: This game to start the football season at Grande Communications Stadium is between two playoff teams from a year ago. But it also features an interesting coaching matchup. Tom Howard, who is beginning his first season at Fort Stockton, coached at Henrietta a year ago. Henrietta knocked the Wolves out of the Class 2A Division I playoffs in 2004. ... The Wolves won 9-7 in 2004. ... Rivera is a two-year letterman and first team all-district defensive back. He rushed for 137 yards on 37 carries last season.

When/where: 8 p.m. today, Lobo Stadium

Monahans head coach Mickey Owens' quote: "I just want to see us have good execution. I also want to see how the kids react to a Friday night game and see how they keep their composure."

Notables: The Loboes usher in a new era as Owens, a one-time Monahans assistant, takes over as head coach. There are plenty of question marks heading into the season as to how good the Loboes can be. Owens has changed the offense from a spread to the Wing-T. ... The good news is Graves is back after rushing for 560 yards last season. ... Defensively, Richardson is back to anchor the line after posting 44 tackles. LB Larry Jasso recorded 77 tackles in 2004. ... A year ago, Midland Christian rolled to a 32-14 victory against the Eagles at Grande Communications Stadium. ... Burleson, who spent part of last season on the varsity squad, takes over for departed quarterback Corey Culp. I believe 3-3a will go 1-2 in these match ups.. But If monahans cant take Merkel(because the badgers may be down this year) I see a repeat of last years 1st round play-off drought for 3-3A

i also dont see 3-3a getting past the first round this year, everybody talks about how bad of a district it is because it doesnt get past the first round, but it plays 3 of the best teams in the state year in and year out

I dont think 3-3a is a bad district at all. I think district 3 is just as strong as dist 1 or 2 or 5

In his first season, 2003, the Golden Tornados were a terror on defense but rarely had the offense to keep up with those in district play. It showed in a 2-8 record with wins by scores of 7-6 and 7-0.
