The amazing thing is that most of Gilmer's starters are Sophomores and Juniors.

It looks like the Buckeyes have reloaded for the 05 season. They were up 10-9 at half to only put up 36 points in the third quarter to let the backups play the rest of the game. The new QB, Jamel Kennedy, that is taking over for Manual Johnson who is now at OU and was the 3A player of the year was great. He was 9-17 passing for 201 yards and 2 TD's. He also rushed 17 times for 93 yards and 3 TD's. Game stats-

Gilmer:
Rush attempts 32 for 246
Pass yards 201
Total: 447
3 punts
Fumbles 4-2

Pine Tree:
Rush attempts 32 for 103 yards
Pass yards 179
Total: 282
6 punts
Fumbles 5-3

Time of possession PT 26:54 Gilmer 19:48

I hope this is just more of the same from last year that is carrying over to this year, and I hope it keeps on coming. These kids are really young but the are really good and will only get better. We might not go as far as last year but it looks like we will be dangerous for several years to come b/c most of the team and starters are Soph. and Jr's.

Gilmer returned to the playing field Thursday as an undisputed champion of the state, and early on it found out how level the playing field can be.

Then an earthquake rocked the place.

In their first game since winning the Class 3A Division II championship, the Buckeyes started slow but erupted for 35 points in the third quarter. This led to a 45-16 victory over Pine Tree before 6,000 fans in the opener of the East Texas Football Classic at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.

Junior quarterback Jamell Kennedy and senior receiver Willie Darden led the rumble, connecting six times for 181 yards and two touchdowns through the air. They hooked up for TDs of 7 and 82 yards in the third, while Kennedy scored on runs of 25 and 7 yards, as the Buckeyes broke open a game it led 10-9 at halftime.

Kennedy finished 9-of-17 for 202 yards and two TDs passing, plus picked up 107 yards and three TDs on the ground in his debut as the starter.

He moved into the role after the graduation of 3A player of the year Manuel Johnson, who is at the University of Oklahoma.

The East Texas Classic resumes Friday when John Tyler takes on Texas High at 8 p.m., then continues Saturday with The Colony facing Wylie at 4 p.m. and Robert E. Lee scheduled to play Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna at 8 p.m.

Down by seven in the second quarter, Gilmer reached the scoreboard for the first time when Shea Harborth made a 32-yard field goal, pulling the Buckeyes to within 7-3 with 9:23 left. The score, which capped a six-play, 64-yard drive, was set up by a 55-yard completion from Kennedy to Darden.

On the ensuing drive, Gilmer recovered a Brandon Jacobs fumble at the 30 to give itself a chance to take the lead. The Buckeyes jumped at the opportunity, moving ahead 10-7 five plays later when Kennedy scored on an 8-yard run around the right end, capping a five-play drive during which he rushed four times for 25 yards.

But Pine Tree rebounded, sending the game into halftime at 10-9 when Jace Estes blocked a Harborth punt with Gilmer trying to milk the clock late in the second. The ball rolled into the end zone and was kicked out by Harborth with at least five Pine Tree players swarming to recover it and score a touchdown.

Junior receiver Curtis Brown opened things up on the first play of the third quarter when he took a Kennedy handoff, reversed his field, and jetted 70 yards to give the Buckeyes a 17-9 lead with 11:39 showing.

Starting its next drive on the Pine Tree 21 thanks to a bad snap on a punt, Gilmer stretched it to 24-9 on a 7-yard TD pass and reception from Kennedy to Darden.

Three minutes later, Kennedy and Darden hooked up for an 82-yard score, just before Kennedy put Pine Tree away with a 25-yard run that made it 38-9 with 4:25 left in the third.
