FOOTBALL INSIDER

Area champs to crown wacky year

Nothing like some predictions to stir up the emotions. Time for a look ahead at the 2005 season:

Bowie quarterback Sherrod Harris returns injured for the Volunteers' second game, against L.D. Bell. Harris and Bell quarterback Joe Mauro combine for 575 yards passing.

Former Dallas Cowboy Deion Sanders tells the Star-Telegram he has adopted a 5-foot-1, 100-pound freshman who played running back in the eighth grade in Wyoming. Football diehards light up Internet message boards, saying the kid is Kenneth Hall's great grandnephew.

Northwest's new stadium draws rave reviews, but the entire state remains in awe of Grande Communications Stadium in Midland.

With prices soaring, Watauga Harvest players each bring 5-gallon drums of gasoline for their Sept. 2 game at Cottage Hill Academy in Mobile, Ala.

School officials at Martin and Arlington move their game to 5 p.m., so fans have time to watch the bitter rivals face off in volleyball.

The Colts' defense returns to form, and finishes the year in the top five among Class 5A schools.

Now retired, former Pilot Point coach G.A. Moore does the coin flip for the Pilot Point-Celina game.

Everman scores on a last-second, Hail Mary pass from quarterback Maurice Moore to beat Kennedale 7-0.

The Keller-Fossil Ridge game will last six overtimes, finally concluding at 12:45 a.m. Concerns over curfew are eased when Keller police spot students breaking out pillows, blankets and portable alarm clocks in what becomes a gigantic slumber party.

Graham running back Pecos McCool rushes for 1,100 yards and wins district superlatives for "Best Football Name."

Nolan Catholic defeats Dallas Bishop Lynch 10-7 to ruin the Friars' homecoming. Nolan students get in the spirit by wearing plastic king and queen crowns to the game.

Mansfield and Summit will slug it out. Mansfield pulls off the upset in a nail-biter, and eventually makes the playoffs.

Trying to top rival ESPN, which used former Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware as a color commentator at last year's Carroll-Denton Ryan game, FSN SW executives gleefully announce the hiring of Gino Torretta as this year's color commentator for the game. Ryan fans get some chuckles from homemade T-shirts that say, "Gino who?"

Seguin will win district and have a 10-win season.

In a matchup of great running backs, Trinity's Dimitri Nance outshines Irving's Jamaal Evans, finishing with 160 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Nance also spoils "Tyson Thompson Night," as the Tigers honor the Cowboys running back at halftime.

Western Hills defeats Arlington Heights and Southwest to win the District 8-4A title.

Trinity hangs on to beat L.D. Bell in a 34-31 classic.

Returning to its glory days, Marcus beats Lewisville in the game of the year and wins the District 8-5A title.

Haltom fans rejoice as the Buffalos go 6-4 and grab the third playoff spot in District 5-5A.

The Associated Press leaves Hebron out of its top 10 rankings for the entire season after the Hawks go 10-0 in the regular season, then lose once again in the first round of the playoffs.

Defending Class 2A state champ Boyd will miss the playoffs.

Stephenville quarterback Jevan Snead and Bridgeport running back Colin Jones win Offensive Player of the Year honors on The Associated Press All-State teams.

It will be a state-title sweep for the Fort Worth area, with Trinity, Carroll, Stephenville and Bridgeport each bringing home the hardware.

Don't forget, that Bridgeport "dream" has to run through Iowa Park first. Otherwise, Good Luck!!
