2005 SAsports.com Official 3A Football Preview
3A Preseason Top 5

1. Devine
Head Coach – Chad Quisenberry
2004 Records: 11-2/5-0
Offensive starters returning: 10
Key returnees offensively: QB Jacob Campsey, WR Kyle Muniz, OL Devin Rotramel
Defensive starters returning: 12
Key returnees defensively: LB Zeke Rodriguez, DL Jeremy Currie, DB Juan Gonzales

This might be the 3A team from Region IV that could make it to state, if it wasn't for Cuero. Too many returnees, with only RB Paul Whitehead and C Travis Allen gone from last year (though Whitehead was the Offensive MVP of the district, and Allen was all-district). No one doubts that another district championship is at hand, but is their schedule tough enough to prepare them for a long playoff haul? Game to watch: 9/23 at Wimberley.

2. Wimberley
Head Coach– Weldon Nelms
2004 Records: 8-4/4-1
Offensive starters returning: 9
Key returnees offensively: WR Riley Allen, OL Buck Burnette, K Garrett Dyer
Defensive starters returning: 6
Key returnees defensively: LB Jacob Biddle, DE Kenny Kimbro, DB Tommy Bennett

This team, if they can fill some holes on the defensive side, will be amazing this year. Pencil in a 27-3A championship; only Liberty Hill will challenge the Texans this season. Lots of publicity for the LB Burnette, but watch for Bennett to make some noise - he was also the 27-3A kick returner of the year. Game to watch: 9/23 at home vs. Devine.

3. Liberty Hill
Head Coach – Jerry Vance
2004 Records: 12-3/4-1
Offensive starters returning: 6
Key returnees offensively: RB Casey Kociuba, OL Chris Luckey, RB Matt Escamilla
Defensive starters returning: 6
Key returnees defensively: LB Aaron McComas, DL Chase Norcross, DB Thomas Perrin

Does any 3A team in the state return a one-two punch in the backfield like Kociuba and Escamilla? Absolutely not. DB perrin will aslo lead the Panthers at quarterback in 2005. One of the reasons that the running backs combined for almost 4500 yards rushing last year was Luckey, but he will need some help around him this season. Game to watch: 9/2 at Burnet.

4. Bandera
Head Coach – Guy Grover
2004 Records: 4-6/1-4
Offensive starters returning: 10
Key returnees offensively: QB Brandon Hicks, OL Jonathan Beauchamp, WR Daniel Rodriguez
Defensive starters returning: 9
Key returnees defensively: DL John Dial, DB Jacob Warden, LB Travis Combs

The last time Bandera had a guy named Hicks at the QB position, they won a state title in 2002. Now here comes this latest edition of the Hicks family, 6 ft 3 and with a rocket for an arm. Oh, and he's only a junior. Coach Grover has been waiting for this team, and they are the dark horse pick to surprise some people. A killer non-district schedule will get them ready for a killer district. Game to watch: 9/16 at Devine.

5. La Vernia
Head Coach – Wayne Johnson
2004 Records: 9-2/5-0
Offensive starters returning: 2
Key returnees offensively: TE Jared Andrews, QB James Tullis, OL Curtis Sanders
Defensive starters returning: 3
Key returnees defensively: LB Ben Herley, DL Dustin Doege, LB Eric Robbins

The big key for the Bears, besides replacing all of the people who graduated, will be how Tullis develops at the QB position. Last year, he was second team all-district, and he's in a district full of great QBs like Sonny Estrada from Poteet and Josh Edge forom Lytle. Game to watch: 10/14 at Poteet.
