Coming off an appearance in the Class 3A Division I state championship game, Cuero coach Mark Reeve expressed his excitement when detailing the Gobblers' plan for success this season.

He also can't help but look to the future.

"Things are looking pretty good for us, not just now but three and four years down the road," said Reeve, a former assistant at Clark who is entering his third season at Cuero. "It's certainly a good situation for us."

It's good enough for others to recognize the Gobblers, who are ranked No. 2 in 3A in the preseason Associated Press statewide poll. Cuero is behind Marlin in 3A and ahead of West Orange-Stark.

Other area teams ranked are Smithson Valley (No. 6 in 5A), Judson (No. 9 in 5A), Boerne (No. 4 in 4A) and Wimberley (No. 9 in 3A).

As for Cuero, statewide notice has become commonplace for a 3A school that resembles a college program in many respects.

Cuero, which opens the season Friday at home against Corpus Christi West Oso, doesn't employ junior high football coaches. The Gobblers' varsity coaching squad also sees that seventh- and eighth-graders are groomed for varsity.

Summer workouts aren't exclusive to any level. Those same seventh- and eighth-graders who receive varsity-level coaching catch a glimpse of the future by lifting weights alongside varsity talent.

Joey Adams was once a bright-eyed junior high player with varsity ambitions. He's now a senior offensive/defensive tackle who mentors future Friday night Gobblers.

"During the summer we'd get to be with the varsity coaches and players," Adams said. "It helps you a lot because you know what to look for. Those coaches and players on the varsity level know what to do. Now I help the younger players by helping them to understand what they can look forward to."

Senior tight end/fullback J.T. Rudd, rated by Texas Football magazine as one of the top 300 seniors in the state, grew up idolizing Cuero's varsity players. Now, he is the object of such admiration.

"Coach Reeve is out there with those young kids like he's out there with us," said Rudd, who joins running back Latreal Cooper from Cuero on Texas Football's list. "You don't see that much. Everyone gets started early here. In Cuero, you're supposed to do well."

Consistent success has produced such a mindset.

Since 1928, Cuero has won 24 district titles, 12 regional championships and reached the state finals 10 times. Included in that span are three state championships (1973, 1974 and 1987).

The Gobblers reached the state final last year before falling to Abilene Wylie 17-14. To most other programs, a berth in the state final would have been viewed as a storied accomplishment. That's not the case in Cuero.

"Ever since we were little kids, we've always watched winning teams," Adams said. "We dreamed about being the next state champions because that's what's always been done. It's what you expect. It's tradition."
