Snyder and Sweetwater has to be one of the top games of the year in any classification....

Cuero - Yoakum is a good one because both teams stand an equal chance of winning. In any 10 year period it will be 5-5 or 6-4. Never lopsided.
That is why Sinton Taft could never be considered a rivalry. Sinton always wins.

I don't know about Snyder-Sweetwater but I have a friend from Sweetwater and his disdain for Snyder and Abilene Wylie is way greater than anything we have around here. Yoakum and Gonzales included.

haha of course all the snyder folks are gonna say Sweetwater, heck i remember back in the eigth grade, our coaches said that if anyone wore red on the day of our Sweetwater games that we'd run 20 laps around the field. And yes they were a few of us that were like nah, bullcrap so they wore red....guess what happened.....they ran!!!

but...... IMO

Cuero vs. Gregory Portland .. My parents say it was heated even back when they were in high school in their olden days :D.

Cuero vs. Gonzales of course.. 98 pranksters put dead turkeys eveyrwhere.

Cuero vs. Yoakum in 93 they burned a Y in our field.

Cuero vs. Columbia ehhh maybe to come idk about that one. That all depends on how many times cuero goes DI. That would be the only way to face columbia if I am correct.

I know that Calallen used to not like gettin beat by us. We played them for many years in the 90's , but idont know if you could call that a rivarly.

Would that also mean Sealy was a rivalry? :P... those great battles with them in the 90's.

Sinton vs Mathis has been a good rivalry, but has dwindled in recent years with the talent pool in Mathis getting so watered down. MP haven't got a win since 2000, and with an exception for 2003, all the games since have been horrid blowouts. Hopefully we'll get a better game this year.

Mathis's ugliest rivalry has been with Orange Grove. Heard some pretty nasty stories from my dad and uncles about the stuff that went on in the late 70s and 80s.

SWEETWATER and SNYDER!!!!!!!

only 30 miles apart, both dropped from 4a at the same time i believe, were big district rivals in 4A, and still are in 3A, have faced each other like 70+ times in football...without a doubt the biggest rivalry in the state along w/ Midland Lee vs. Odessa Permian and Abilene High vs. Cooper

Sweetwater and Abilene High used to be a good rivalry back in the day...along w/ Sweetwater and Denison (in the 90's)

BUT!!! NONE will EVER compare to the Sweetwater vs. Snyder rivalry!!!!!!

I don't think too many people liked Stephenville during their run in the 90's. Denison did manage to go 3-1 against S'ville and knocked them out of the playoffs 3 years in a row but was never able to beat La Marque to get a ring!

Columbia biggest rivalry is with Sweeny. It stretches back to 1947, and the current record is 26-26-1. It's been tame lately, but there was a stretch between 1951-55 when no games were played because of fan violence....

im a big believer in one play doesnt lose a game, the loss was not his fault, theres a whole game before that....if the defense would have stopped them one more time if the offense would have scored one more time, you cant blame a game on a single player

Sweetwater plays snyder in snyder on friday October 14 @ 7:30
this will be the 52nd meeting between these 2 team - since 1926

Sweetwater holds a 32-18-1 win to lose advantage over the tigers.

The only tie took place in 1965 with neither team scoring.

Sweetwater held Snyder scoreless on 7 occasions (1926,1937,1962, 1965,1968, 1970,1982)

Snyder shut out the Mustangs 4 times (1927,1956, 1965, 1979)

The largest margin of victory is 49 points with the Mustangs being victorious by this amount in 1937,1968,& 1988.

The largest margin of victory for the Tigers was a 24-0 win in 1979

A one point margin of victory has happened twice once in 1954 with the Mustangs winning 13-12

And once in 2004 by Snyder 21-20 in playoff game at Big Spring

just correcting some facts: It's one of the state's older rivalries, dating back to 1925 with 57 previous games and Sweetwater holds a 34-22-1 edge in the all-time series.

my records indicate the following - if you have documentation to correct please include

In the past 53 years there have been 7 seasons that the two rivals have not played, 1972,1973,1974,1975, 1991, 2000 & 2001.

Information for the results of the 1969 season could not be found

while Bubba could have made a mistake - especially dealing with the dark days of Sweetwater football, that being the decade of the 70's
I am confident in the rest of the information posted.
Buba u might be right i dont know but this is what i got. we all know Ron Howell can make mistakes.

It's one of the state's older rivalries, dating back to 1925 with 56 previous games. But when Sweetwater and Snyder butt heads this Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Big Spring, it will mark only the second time the teams have met in the playoffs.

And until now, the only time the Mustangs and Tigers played in December was on a bas-ketball court.

This is also the first time that the teams have ever met in the quarterfinals, and it's the first time that each came into the matchup with 11 victories al-ready under their belts.

Sweetwater holds a 34-21-1 edge in the all-time series and has already beaten Snyder once this season, 35-25, back on Oct. 15 in a District 4-3A matchup. The Tigers have lost two in a row to the Mustangs since their last victory, a 26-20 double overtime shootout two years ago at Snyder.

Incidentally, this is only the second time Sweetwater and Snyder have played football against each other twice in the same season. The other time came in 1982, when the teams -- due to the closing of Odessa's Ector High School which left a hole in their schedules -- agreed to play two games with only the second one counting as a district contest.

Many of you reading this column no doubt will remember the only other time Sweetwater and Snyder met in the playoffs in 1990. That area-round game was played at Mustang Bowl and attracted a huge crowd that was one of the largest in the stadium's 65-year history.

Realignment prior to the '90 season had placed Sweetwater and Snyder in separate districts for the first time in 17 years, but the rivalry was extended due to the first-ever football playoff between the two schools.

Sweetwater not only had the homefield advantage in 1990, but also a seemingly-huge psy-chological edge over the Tigers. The Mustangs had won the pre-vous 11 matchups, and most by big margins.

But the toughest loss for Snyder had come in the previous season, when Sweetwater pulled out a miraculous last-second 18-13 win by intercepting a pass and scoring a touchdown on the last play.

However, the Tigers got sweet revenge on their tormentors in 1990. Sweetwater took a 3-0 lead in the early going, but failed to score again as Snyder, taking advantage of several critical turnovers, rallied for a 17-3 victory despite not making a first down in the second half.

Throughout the rivalry, one team or the other has run off several wins in a row. Sweetwa-ter lost seven straight to Snyder during the 1970s before winning the next 11. That was fol-lowed by three straight Snyder wins, but Sweetwater then won four straight before losing three consecutive games in 1998, '99 and 2001.

For some reason, the rivalry was shut down for 15 years af-ter the 1937 season. But since it resumed in 1952, the Mustangs and Tigers have faced each other on the field every year with the exception of 1972, 1973, 1991, 2000 and 2001.

i added 1 to the total times played cause this article came out before the playoff game and added one win to the tigers.

Ingleside vs. Aransas Pass is pretty heated. The two high schools are 4.8 miles apart and it's on par or better than any other rivalry I've seen. Of course I've never been a part of the Battle of the Big Sandy, Sweetwater/Snyder, El Campo/Bay City, or Brownwood/Stephenville... but it's every bit as heated as G-P/Calallen even when playoff spots aren't on the line.

by far in almost any class snyder and sweetwater hate each other.......the friday when we played snyder some stupid sweetwater folks wore black and gold in spite and our teachers and coaches made them take them off and wear "i love sweetwater high" shirts.........................i hate snyder unless they are the only team left from 4-3A and then i'll cheer them on all the way.......might go as far as to go to a game

a rivalry that has potential is needville / west columbia....the battle for hwy 36, roughly 15 miles apart or so. hopefully needville can build on a good year this year so i can see this potential rivalry develop.

Wylie is becoming a big rivalry for both Sweetwater and Snyder.
There just isnt any where near the history there yet as what Sweetwater and Snyder have with each other.
This rivalry goes back about 75 years or so.
The Wylie rivalry only goes back about 5 or 6.
Wylie and Merkel used to be huge rivals before Wylie started dominating them the last few years. They still hate each other, but Wylie just has bigger fish to fry now and Merkels numbers have just gone down so much the last few years. They really need to be dropped to 2A.

I agree with ya until that last part about dropping Merkel to 2a....i dont think they should. But ya Wylie isnt near as big a rival as S'water is too us, but they're someone that we talk about beating all the time.

No doubt, we want to beat Wylie just as bad as Snyder, but it just hasnt become nearly as intense, and probably never will.
I dont really understand your thinking on Merkel though.
They are sure having a hard time competing at this level for the last couple of years, and I dont see that changing any time soon.
I wish they could, but I just dont see it happening.
I do think Clyde may have potential though.

I dunno, it seems that Merkels been having a tough time, but maybe this next year they can step it up. If they do continue to have years like this one, then i'd say ya, move em down, it sucks to lose all the time.

cameron vs. rockdale.....great history....you could go 9-1 but if that loss is to the rival, its a bad year, even if you go 1-9, if you beat the rival, it was a season saver

Gilmer vs. Gladewater
Daingerfield vs. Pittsburg

A kid actually got killed during Gladewater weekend when I was in junior high. I can't remember if the two events had anything to do with each other, but it definitely makes the memories more intense.

As far as I know SNyder & Sweetwater started playing in 1927 it was in Snyder. Here is what I found interesting Sweetwater brought over 1000 fans by train and then walked over a mile to the field. Can you imagine 1000 people walking through town. In the pictue most are in there Sunday clothes. Just thought that was a great story. Snyder won 8-7 or something like that it was a very close game.

I found it in a old newspaper article. They might have played earlier then that. That was as far back as I could trace it. I thought it was great that over 1000 people made the trip knowing they were going to have to walk. It was probally a picnic type atmosphere huh. During the late 20's early 30's they usually played 2 times probally because of travel.

Seems like it goes back a little farther than that, if I remember correctly. I'm not real sure, but I think it goes back to about 1901. I'll have to do some checking. I know I have seen that info within the last year.
