7 ON 7 STATE TOURNAMENT WRAP-UP AND AWARDS

The State 7 on 7 Tournament for 2003 and it is time to wrap up the weekends events. Here is a look at some Awards we would like to give out plus a quick hitter on some of the top players who were there.

TOP PLAYER: QB Stephen McGee (Burnet)
The history of the 7 on 7 state tournament is full of top players coming into the tournament and looking very good. However no one has EVER put on a show quite like the Burnet phenom did this past weekend. Often times he would hook up with Jordan Shipley on a bomb each time during the first play of most games. Not only was this effective but it set the tone for the games. Stephen showed that not only was he deserving of his # 74 national ranking by Rivals.com, but showed that the ranking was actually too low. Not one official, member of the state 7 on 7 board, or any fan who watched Stephen thought that there was someone more talented in the tournament. Simply the most dominating performance in 7 on 7 history.

TOP TWO-WAY PLAYER: Jordan Shipley (Burnet)
A great quarterback is nothing without receivers and in Shipley, Stephen McGee had one of the best in Texas for the weekend. Jordan was deadly on crossing routes, flair routes and any other routes you can think of. Then he would flip over to defense and play man to man or deep safety. Those who did not believe in Jordan Shipley before the game did afterwards.

TOURNAMENT MVP: QB Shea Smith (Permian)
When Permian went on their day two run it was with great plays, timely pass deflections, and incredible leadership by their quarterback. He kept them together, he lead them, and when the game was on the line he made passes that allowed the receivers to make plays. Only a man and a team on a mission could be the McGee to Shipley duo, and that team was MOJO.

BEST TEAM: Odessa Permian
They came in the tournament playing for their injured friend and for themselves to serve notice to the state that they were back. Game after game, play after play they did what it took to win. If the other team gave an inch they took a yard. In the end they had more heart than any two teams out there and they took the tournament for their friend and their fans. They were the best story of the weekend and MOJO IS BACK!!!!

THE TOP RECEIVERS: Austin Doran (Keller) and Rodney Rideau (PA Memorial)
Keller must have something in the water where receivers learn to run great routes and just know how to get open. Doran was deadly to defenses who were impotent to stop him.
When the nation's number one recruiting guru, Bobby Burton of Rivals.com and Texas Prep Xtra, wants to know "who is that", then you have made a big impression. Rodney was the Titans most deadly of receivers and made big-time plays all weekend long.

TOP QUARTERBACKS: Kirby Freeman (Brownwood) and Scott Elliott (Bay City)
The big name quarterbacks did not fail to show large in the tournament. Kirby Freeman took his team a long way against a tough Bay City team. In the end only one big name committed quarterback could advance.

TOP SAFETY: Andrew Kelson, Houston Lamar
It is scary to have a defensive back this big and this fast not to mention this good. Kelson was a force for Lamar and showed the fans why he is a national top 100 player by Rivals.com

TOP CORNERBACK: Danny Gorrer, Port Arthur Memorial
Though he should only be a junior this upcoming year he has taken so many extra classes that he is going to graduate one year early. He showed that he had speed, quickness and coverage skills to be a top division one player.

BIGGEST DRAW OF THE WEEKEND: Stephen McGee (Burnet)- The A&M fans came out in droves to see him and did not go away disappointed.

BEST GAMES OF THE WEEKEND: Port Arthur Memorial played in a pair of classics on Saturday. First they went into overtime to defeat one of the top 7 on 7 teams in Tyler Lee. Then they followed up with another nail biter against Burnet where they lost by one point.

BEST IDEA BY STATE 7 ON 7 BOARD: Having all the games on Penberthy was the best idea over the weekend. All the games on one giant field made recruit watching easy for us and others who like to watch football. Each year they have made the tournament better and better for fans and players alike.

He is right on about the Doran kid from Keller being a top receiver. I watched him against Celina and he almost single-handedly won the game. Watched 8-10 games and he was by far the toughest to defend. The QB did a godd job of getting him the ball also.

One observation; every team there had a good QB, and some had 2.
