It would appear no one showed up to watch this one since there's no response. Could be too that it wasn't very pretty, lol.

2-1 El Campo... Here's a write-up about their scrimmage from the El Campo Leader-News:

Defensive showcase for Ricebirds against Roughnecks

WEST COLUMBIA – Stellar defensive play was the highlight of Thursday’s scrimmage as the Ricebirds tangled with the Columbia Roughnecks, ranked No. 6 in the state on preseason polls, and El Campo came out on top of a 2-1 decision.

“I think we learned something tonight, scoring is not real easy,” Ricebird head coach Bob Gillis said. “Columbia has a good football team, they are very quick on defense.
“I was proud of our kids since we hung in there, hung in there, and scored a couple of times. It may take us two or three quarters to score.”

The only first down the EC defense allowed during the first sequence of plays by the Columbia first unit came on a pass interference call.
In addition Joe Gallegos had a big hit on a quarterback sack that resulted in a loss of 7 yards for the Roughnecks. The initial series of plays ended for Columbia with an interception by Derek Washington.

“The defense is playing really good at this stage,” Gillis noted. “For us to be good during the season, our defense is going to have to be good. Our kids are playing good defense right now, but there are a few things we can correct.
“The main thing is we need to find some other defensive players so we can rest some of our guys who are playing both ways.”

Each team scored once when the second units went through their sequence of plays.
Kord Quintero finished off a solid drive by the Ricebirds with a 10-yard scamper to the end zone. The drive also featured some shifty runs by quarterback Tyler Woods.
The Roughnecks had the ball at the EC 2 when a busted play resulted in the Columbia quarterback scoring when he kept the ball and ran wide to the left in order to avoid the Ricebird pursuit.

The kicking game was featured next with each squad attempting field goals at various distances. Punting and kick-offs followed with Tim Evanicky handling the deep snaps.
Michael Enriquez and Woods both connected on the extra-point attempt. Moving back to try a 40-yard field goal, Enriquez missed while Woods put his kick through the upright. Both were unsuccessful on 50-yard attempts.
“We had some good snaps and that was one area where we had to replace somebody,” Gillis said. “Tyler punted the ball real well. Michael and Tyler also did well on the field goal attempts.”

El Campo and Columbia then simulated a quarter of play with punts included, which resulted in fair catches for both sides.
While the Roughnecks had an impressive 7-yard gain following an incomplete pass, a pair of penalties made third-and-three turn into third-and-16.
A long pass attempt was incomplete and Columbia punted the ball. Lee Orr hauled in the punt at the EC 41.
Troy Banks gained 5 yards on a pass reception from Trent Tomanek, but the Ricebirds had to punt the ball when they reached fourth-and-six. Woods booted the ball to the Roughneck 23.
A fumble in the backfield resulted in a loss of 4 yards for Columbia. Two pass attempts fell incomplete. Another punt was caught by Orr at the EC 38.

Anthony Bradshaw charged up the middle for 6 yards, but was stopped for no gain on the next play. Tomanek then fed the ball to Washington on a sweep to the right.
Washington avoided a tackle and then cut back to the middle of the field. A sprint to the end zone left a couple of Roughnecks in chase mode as Washington completed the 56-yard touchdown run.
Enriquez missed the PAT attempt as the ball went wide left.

“We haven’t run the sweep a lot with Derek, and we know it’s one of his best plays,” Gillis noted. “He showed what kind of ability he does have on that final touchdown run when we ran the sweep. We also had good blocking up front.
“Derek’s got a bit of a linebacker mentality. I think that kind of shows in his running technique. Sometimes he’s not going to run around you, he’s going to try to run over you.”

El Campo’s offensive line has included center James Sedlock with James Terrell, Dustin Janak, Garrett Cerny, James Cannell and Bryce Skow at tight end.

The first sequence of plays for the Ricebirds had some short gains by Washington and Bradshaw running off tackle while Tomanek gained 20 and 17 yards on a pair of runs from the shotgun position.
“Early on we were still running shotgun and working on our outside game,” Gillis explained. “We felt like we could do what we did at the end in running right at them and using the sweep. But we wanted to work on other things as well.
“The shotgun looked good at times, but other times it didn’t. One good thing was, though, we didn’t give up a sack out of the shotgun."

Both Tomanek and Woods have become adept at being able to make quick reads from the shotgun formation and running when necessary.
“That is kind of what the shotgun gives you,” Gillis said. “The quarterback can see a little bit better since he has time to sit back and look. If nobody is open then they can run the ball. Trent did good as well as Tyler.”

Not bad, Necks...

I saw El Campo play last year and they were pretty stout...

But it's nothing new to you guys, you were in their district for a long time...

Not much to say, as it was a typical scrimmage between two good teams. The offenses are still lagging behind the defenses for both teams, what with all the penalties & fumbles, but thats not unusual this early. I'm ready to see what they can do over four quarters against Yoakum.
