Stangs look for progress in final scrimmage
By RON HOWELL/Reporter Sports Editor

It has been a good preseason so far at Sweetwater, which had an impressive performance in its opening scrimmage six days ago at Mustang Bowl against Midland Christian and has been almost injury-free.

The Mustangs will get another shot at playing someone else today as they return to the Bowl to face another Class 3A school, Vernon. According to head coach Kent Jackson, the freshman and JV teams will begin the scrimmage at 6 p.m., with the varsity scrimmage start-ing between 7 and 7:30 p.m. A con-trolled format will again be used, with the first units running two sets of 15 plays on offense and defense while the second units will run two sets of 10 plays apiece. However, tonight's affair will also end with a "live" 12-minute quarter with the scoreboard in use.

For all the positives, Jackson knows his team must continue to improve as it gets ready for a rugged regular sea-son schedule that begins with Lubbock Cooper on Aug. 26, and also includes non-district games against four other 2004 playoff teams -- San Angelo Lake View, Greenwood, Andrews and Level-land. And Sweetwater's six non-district games, of course, are mere preparation for the more important District 4-3A schedule that begins Oct. 7 against defending Class 3A, Division I champion Abilene Wylie.

Jackson looks at today's scrimmage as an "opportunity."

"It's another great opportunity for us to play against someone else," he said. "And it's a great learning opportunity that you can't get in practice. Our big-gest goal is to come out healthy and get things lined up going into the season. This will help us (coaches) to make the decisions that we need to make. We're excited about it and the kids are excited. We're finally getting into a routine. The kids are ready to get started and hit on someone else."
