I noticed in the first few games this year that teams now are using a libero in the volleyball games. Very interesting!

Yes, Phil, high school volleyball is now completely like college volleyball with the new libero put in the rotation....I think its a grand idea myself....seeing as the rest of the rules were also similar to the college ranks.....lookin' forward to the season!

I agree with you gobbler. It is good that high school has same rules as college for the benefit of the girls. Here is a link:

That's a great link for all those parents out their wondering what this position is....I've already had several questions I've had to answer for some parents who do not know what the purpose of the libero is....since I play a little college ball, I can answer most of their questions!

Gobbler I think though that teams have the option to not have a libero though it would seem like it would be a disadvatage not to have one. Maybe you can help on this.
From what I understand the libero cannot hit the ball over the net if it is completely above the net. The officials have been calling it when the libero does that so I am sure it will get smoothed out as the season goes along and the liberos get used to it.

Yes, the libero is simply a DEFENSIVE position ONLY.....they cannot attack the ball if the ball is COMPLETELY OVER the net, but may attack let's say if the ball is not...for example spiking from the back row without jumping, they are able to do that, also, they are not allowed to set the ball over the net or to another player if they happen to be in front of the ten foot line or attacking line.....the libero is an important and useful position, but the individual also has great responsibility as well!

And I thought that liberos were indoor soccer shoes made by Adidias LOL

I thought liberos were having to do with a certain political party.:(

Wow!, I was a libero, unofficially, and didn't even know it. Coach Turke would call me and another player, "back line specialist". No balls would hit the floor, nor would they get past us! The hitters would rotate out, and we would go in and played back line and served. Once out of substituions, she leaves us in , and we would play front line too. Good thing I had a good verticle, and that would make up for my lack of good height, as I am only 5'3".

Let's see, if you're 5'3'' and what's the height of the net?....that'd mean you'd hafta have one heckuva vertical to slam the ball down!!!:D

Yeap I have a cool, cool, picture of me spiking the ball! I was a cheerleader at the same time, so I had alot of practice jumping! :)

I worked out off season real hard, and during conditioning, on my verticle. We do those jumps against the wall, with your hands up, and right when you were the most tired you, you try to jump even harder. One other front line person, was the same size as me, and she played frontline and backline she had a heck of a verticle too.

I know it's alot, alot of fun, still play it regularly on Sunday with friends from my congregation. I have to admit it was hard for me no to be so compeitive and play "jungle ball". But I have learned to play it for just the plain fun of it. I like to catch some of the games, but lately it's so hard with my hectic schedule. So is this team co-ed?

At our tournament last night Ray HS had an outstanding libero. She was short but man she could dig that balll and set up. There were lots of hard spikes right at her but they would just bounce off her hands and she would hit it up in the air for a set up. I think she might have handled the great Wimberley spikers of two years ago but of course they wouldn't have aimed it at her very long.

The team I spoke of is in a men's league, we have sorta a traveling team that goes to college station, san marcos, corpus, and other colleges around and plays teams from there.....I do also participate in intramurals at UTSA, both in the men's division and in the coed division with mostly my classmates from cuero, that is the one thing we enjoy coming back together to play....we call ourselves "The Dirty Birds!"

We had one team called NetWork out of San Antonio that came to our spring tournament about two years ago. It was great because a lot of their players were closer to my age and they did very well. I had a sign and was hoping they would come this year to our tournament but alas! they went to the Ingleside tournament that day. :(

Hey gobbler the spring tournament in Sinton this year included men's competition. Maybe your team can come next spring.
