Article on Mizzou scrimmage from the Kansas City Star:

Freshman QB steals show at MU scrimmage

COLUMBIA — The jury is still out on Missouri’s ability to hike the ball between the center’s legs into the hands of a quarterback in shotgun formation. But once the Tigers’ quarterbacks — apparently any of them — latch on to the ball, they seem to be adept at tossing it into the arms of any number of receivers.

Returning senior starter Brad Smith, junior Brandon Coleman, redshirt freshman Chase Patton and true freshman Chase Daniel combined to hit on 44 of 69 passes for 559 yards and five touchdowns in a marathon scrimmage at Faurot Field on Tuesday morning.

But hold on to your depth chart, because it was Daniel — listed as the fourth-string quarterback headed for a redshirt season at the start of the day — who led the passing parade. In a mix of appearances with the fourth- and second-string offenses, Daniel hit 12 of 20 passes for 190 yards, including an incredible 50-yard pass on an 80-yard TD reception by Arnold Britt.

MU didn’t provide official statistics to the media, but in unofficial stats kept by The Star, Smith hit 12 of 17 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Coleman hit 11 of 20 for 11 yards and two touchdowns, with an interception. Patton hit nine of 12 passes for 113 yards.

“Personnelwise,” MU head coach Gary Pinkel said, “there will be some moves going on, which will be a real plus. The competition will make it better.”

Pinkel wasn’t specifically addressing the QB position on his evolving depth chart. But neither was Pinkel dodging the speculation on who ultimately might open the season as the No. 2 quarterback to Smith.

“There’s certainly competition there for that backup spot, and I don’t think it’s etched in granite who that’s going to be yet,” Pinkel said. “It could stay like it is now, or it could change after next Saturday.”

Missouri will scrimmage again on Saturday afternoon, and Pinkel said he would try to get 50 snaps for the first two offensive units and 40 or so for the third and fourth strings. On Tuesday, more than 150 plays — including punt and field-goal simulations – were run at Faurot Field.

Of Daniel, specifically, Pinkel added: “Certainly, he has shown enough that he will deserve an opportunity to see how good he can be this year as a freshman.”

Daniel wasn’t about to make too much of his performance in one scrimmage. Ruefully, he admitted that he made his 80-yard TD play with Britt harder by dropping the shotgun snap from center.

“He never gave up,” Daniel said of Britt. “I told him to be ready for anything. I’m going to throw it if he’s open. He used his speed across the field, and he was wide open and took it in.”

Although he doesn’t have a vote on any depth chart changes — which Pinkel said might not be made public until after Saturday, Temple marveled at how Daniel didn’t look much like a fourth-string quarterback.

“Not at all,” Temple said, “and he may not be.”
