Aransas Pass senior football player Andrew Guajardo could be released from the hospital within the next two days after being shot in the chest this past week, according to Panthers coach P.J. "Bootsie" Larsen.

Guajardo was shot once in the chest while standing outside of a residence on the 100 block of 10th Street on Aug. 11. He was taken to Christus Spohn Hospital Memorial's intensive care unit and is now in a private room at the hospital, according to Larsen.

"Andrew is doing a little better - he's a strong kid and he's in good shape (which has helped in his recovery)," Larsen said. "The doctors are saying that he (could) possibly be back (playing football) within a month and that's what we're hoping for."

The 18-year-old Guajardo was projected to be the Panthers' starting tailback and cornerback this season.

"It's a great relief," Larsen said. "When it happened, it devastated the kids, the (assistant) coaches and myself. That's when you really worry about things like life. We're fortunate the good Lord took care of him in recovery."
