We all know Lance has won the overall results and won the yellow jersey which goes to the overall leader and is the most profitable of course. Even though Lance won it and the USA is justifiable proud I must point out it is a team effort. On Lance's team there were 9 members on his team and had representatives from the following countries besides the USA of course: Ukraine, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Czechoslavakia.

Other jerseys awarded which are quite profitable are the points jersey (green) won by Thur Hashovd, and the Polca Dot jersey won by Michael Rasmussen for King of the Mountains. The white jersey which goes to best young rider went to Lance's teammate Yarusla Popyvich.

Not awarded any money or any jerseys is the team title which went to T-Mobile which edge out Lance's team for first place. Even though there is no money or jersey involved this usually helps a team more easily get sponsors. T-Mobile had several overall titile contenders which actually may have hurt their team captain due to internal arguments. That is why you need one contender and one captain for each team like Lance has.

By winning stage 20 Lance's team (Discovery Channel) won 4 stages which edged out T-Mobile and even though no awards or jerseys are awarded this is good publicity and helps win sponsors.

The winner of each stage doesn't get a jersey but does get a trouphy and this helps get sponsors. Sponsors love to have their riders get in the papers and spotlight.

Just for your info Phil, Lance won $650,000 for his win in the 2005 TdF. As tradition goes he does not keep one penny. He instead distributes the money among his team.

Thank you for the information turbo. You are right about the overall winner not keeping the money but it goes to his teammates. I think the coaches and staff and other expenses are paid by the sponsors. The overall winner gets money in other ways such as advertising. All winners generally become millionaires and in Lance's case multi-millionaire.

ttt for those interested in jersey information. There is also a pink jersey awarded for each Stage winner and this means extra profits for those that may not win any other jerseys does mean great publicity for the individual and team which means more sponsor money.
