Local team wins both games at softball tourney
NEW BRAUNFELS -- The Heat, a Sweetwater 8-under se-lect girls softball team, went a perfect 2-0 when it played at a Summer Blowout tournament in New Braunfels last weekend.
Sweetwater crushed the San Marcos Crush, 18-2, in its first game and came back to defeat the Sugarland Stars, 15-5, in its final contest.
In addition to scoring a total of 33 runs, Sweetwater collected a total of 53 hits in winning the two games.
Almost half of Sweetwater's 27 hits against San Marcos (12) were for extra bases. The leading individual hitters against San Marcos were Sierra Allen with a triple, double and two singles; Summer Valenzuela with a triple, double and two singles; Marrissa Hernandez with a triple and two singles; Kaitlynn Rendon with two triples and a single; Savanna Hall with three singles; Allison Winslett and Hannah Heredia each with two doubles; Abby Barrera with a double and single; Lindzi Clemmer with two singles; and Alex Mendez and Brianna Limon with singles. Allen scored four runs, Hernandez three, Clemmer, Valenzuela, Heredia and Hall two and Rendon, Winslett and Barrera one.
The team's offensive assault in the victory against Sugarland was led by Clemmer with a double and two singles; Allen with two triples and a single; Hall with a double and two singles; and Rendon and Winslett each with three singles. In addition, Valenzuela and Limon each had a double and single; Hernandez, Heredia and Barrera had two singles; and Mendez had a single. Clemmer had three runs scored, while Allen, Valenzuela, Hernandez and Limon scored two runs and Rendon, Hall and Barrera one.
