This could be a critical one for Lance. There are some escapees about 16 min ahead of the peloton but once again they are not serious contenders. Lance is near the front and satisfied to stay there with his main contenders. They made him mad yesterday which may not have been wise but till they need to make a move if they hope to stop him from winning his seventh tour. Go Lance Go!

There are 21 stages in the Tour de France. They are done over a 24 day period with three days set aside for rest day. Today is rest day which is the last rest day for this year. They get out of the mountains tomorrow and then there are three flat days with the last time trial on Saturday. Then they ride into Paris Sunday to end the 2005 Tour de France.it. By long time tradition the stage Sunday is just a formality when all the riders ride together and stay in the peloton as they finish the tour in Paris so that even though there are 21 stages there basically are 20 competitive stages with the final winner decided on the 20th stage.

Overall Lance is satisfied where he is right now and he will be watching his main competitors especially if they try to breakaway from the peloton. He will be satisfied with the status quo the rest of the tour.

I still think there are twenty, but there is something about the last stage being only ceremonial. not quite sure.
