In the Pacific, they would call that a SUPER Typhoon!

You know, the problem is....it will weaken when it crosses the Yucatan and then strengthen in the gulf. We need to hope it moves fast and does not stall in the gulf.

interesting thought that there might only be that small red dot that would actually cause the worst part of the whole hurricane, not so say that 39 to 73mph aren't trouble

Not to sound like its not a big deal (because it is) but when a hurricane comes in from this track its probability of hitting the south Texas coast is MUCH lower than when one crosses over Cuba and directly into the Gulf. The ones that cross the Yucatan usually end up turning northward afterwards and landing more towards New Orleans, Mississippi, Florida panhandle area...while before they cross the Yucatan they are usually tracked to hit anywhere from Brownsville to Port Lavaca, yet very rarely does the eye make landfall within 300 miles of this area. The best example that comes to mind is Hurricane Opal because it was a VERY similar story line to this one. I know there have been others recently but Opal comes to mind since I was living in Corpus Christi at the time and remember going through all of the preperations for a hurricane.

It looks more likely that landfall could be further north than everyone is projecting. :(

Does anybody know if Port Arthur could be in the path of this monster?:(

Port Arthur should be fine. Corpus Christi and all of the coastline south is in the path though. The only way it goes that far north is if the high pressure off of the east coast that's acting as a steering mechanism moves. Otherwise, Emily will not turn north as hurricanes typically do.

i dont know you've got the coastal winds from the pacifics last hurricane that i think pushes it up

I have to agree here, common sense from watching previous hurricanes tells me that this storm will bounce off the Yucatan rather quickly as it will seek the path of least resistence I.E. Gulf waters and this bounce will force a slight northerly turn sending it to a head on collision with the south Texas coast. :( Good luck down there guys. You will have my prayers and thoughts.

I see that folks in Port Isabel (was there last night) are not taking Emily too serious, hardly no one is boarding up or making any plans  I say even 40 mph winds can cause damage.

I hope everyone heeds the warnings, like the saying goes better safe than sorry!

I wonder what those high winds can do to a stadium, being that Tarpon stadium is just across the bay ...

I remember when Allen blew through South Texas in 1980, it really did a number on Bishop's stadium. Totally destroyed the press box and a good deal of the bleachers...and they were 15 miles inland:eek: That was about a month before the start of the season, too.

Allen also did damage to Kingsville's Javelina Stadium. The 1980 season was the only season A&I (for us older folks) played all of their games in the daytime, because the light towers were knocked over. If you go there now, you will see a concrete stand below each metal light standard. Those are the original stands the light poles were on. They were all knocked over by Hurricane Allen,

Yeah my hubby tells me that Allen had some strong surge, lots of wind and flooding even though it was a category 1 or 2.

Dang Butter...I'd forgotten about that. I'm an A&I grad, class of '91. I had forgotten about the light towers getting knocked down. I was 11 when Allen hit so I remember the storm fairly well. When I was in college I heard stories about the '80 season being all day games due to no light towers at the stadium. Kinda wish they'd play more day games now, to be honest...

Maroon and footballgal are young! I remember the same thing happened to Javelina stadium in 1967 when Beulah hit. It blew down the lights and we had to have all our Kingsville games during the day. It was kind of cool having daytime games. They really had a great game against Southwest Texas State (Texas State) the last game of the year. Southwest Texas Stage was ranked No. 1 and we were No. 3 or No.4 in the polls in the last game of the year. We (Texas A&I) kicked a field goal in the last 2 minutes to win a thriller 23 to 21. A great win indeed.

Please Please....this is a hurricane update thread!!!....kindly take your football memories to another one...Geezzzzzzz, we need to keep this one open for important weather emergency updates and warnings!!!! Let's stay on course here guys...only hurricane updates need to be posted on here......We have to remember the danger we could be in....Lets hope for the best, but I am pessimistic at this point...lets remember to all stay calm and although it looks like most of us will escape the hurricane's fury, we have to remember what they are capable of doing.....hang in there and always remember! :D :D :D :p

The guy that kicked the field goal was John Kardow. I used to see him quite a bit when I was going to school there. He was VP of Kleberg FNB, I believe. My earliest memories are of being huddled in our house in CC during Hurricane Celia in 1970. My parents told me when I got older that I was upset during Celia because they wouldn't let me go outside to play football. I was 2, so the addiction obviously started young.:D Fitting that the first memory of a CC native is of a hurricane.

Just saw on the local news that the hurricane has been upgrde to a category 3, winds are now at 115mph.

I hope my hubby comes home soon, has to stay at his work as late as possible, and his been there since early this morning. My main concern right now is flooding, since this area tends to flood easily with all the water canals in the area.
