This is an important day for Lance. There is about 35 miles left to go in this tough race on the mountains. T-Mobile has set a hard pace and riders are droping like flies. Lance is still with them without his teammates. Shocking stuff!

There are a group of escapees about 9min35sec ahead of the peloton but none of them are serious contenders.

It looks like it is down to Lance, Ullrich, Basso and Kacheskin not to forget that the escapees are now just over five minutes ahead.

It is a brutal climb. Lance, Basso, Landis, and Ullrich are fighting it out. Close behind is Rasmussan, Evans and Vinokourov. Remember Lance is only 38 seconds ahead of Rasmussan. Popyvych is trying to catch up to his issolated captain (Lance). I don't think he will make it so Lance is on his own today.

Even without his teammates Lance is doing good as he leads his group and have passed some of the escapees. Go Lance Go!

Lance, Ullrich, Landis, Leipheimer and Basso are still about 30 seconds ahead of Rasmussan, Evans, Kloden, Mancebo and Zubelia. The escapee is 4min30sec ahead of Lance's group.

It looks bad at the summit. Many of the fan have evidently been drinking and are running along side of the riders even pushing them. I hope they don't cause any crashes or injuries. Come on people! Please get off the road!

Lance and his group are now on the ascent part of the race. Forgive my outburst on the fans. Fans are great and are needed for all sports but they must know their place. They should not take foolish risks that might injure themselves and the participates and possibly ruin the tour for everyone.

George Totschnig of Austria wins the stage. He was one of the escapees. He wasn't pursued because he was not a contender but he ran a great race and deserved the win. Lance came in second in a final sprint with Basso who came in third. Ullrich came in fourth.

Overall a good race for Lance because he gained time on his contenders. Rasmussen was only 38 seconds behind him before this stage and he is still in second place but now is 1min41sec behind Lance.
What was great for the Austian Totschnig is that he is only the second Austrian to win a stage of the Tour de France. It has been a long drought because the last time an Austrian won it was Max Bulla back in 1931!

Tomorrow will be more of the Pyrenees mountains and more excitement coming indeed.
