Very good vet! In 1968 John Carlos and another athlete won medals but in defiance due to alleged discrimination in the USA they held their hands up in fists. The USA kicked them off the team and sent them home.

The other athlete was Tommie Lee I think. Jesse Owens tried to talk them out of it. It was a form of protest for Civil Rights.

In the 1936 Olympics in Germany Hitler put on a big propaganda show for Germany that worked especially since the German athletes won most of the medals and the press gave Berlin good reviews that year but one man put a big damper on it? Who was he?

I believe it was the aforementioned Jesse Owens....And it was a particularly satisfying performance because he was African American and not of Aryan decent! I am sure Hitler was beside himself (hopefully). Jesse, from all of accounts, handled himself with class and character throughout the whole affair. He was a great American.

Right you are vet on everything. The thing that turned out to be a shame was that Germany made a good impression and this helped caused the USA to stay out of the war as long as possible and turned our head to the holocaust and set us up for Pearl Harbor.

While the loss to the USSR was a tremendous blow to our national ego and a blackeye for olympic officiating.....I was thinking of something much more serious.

Wasn't 1972 Olympics where several Israeli team members were taken hostage by Arabs with a couple being killed?

Also, the love of my life (at the time)  :inlove: , Mark Spitz was advised to leave the Olympic games to avoid being attacked. :(
