Texas A&M's Jaxson Appel (Friendswood, Texas) was added to the 2005 "watch list" for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given annually to the College Defensive Player of the Year by the Maxwell Football Club, the organization announced on Monday.

A first-team All-Big 12 selection by The Associated Press in 2004, Appel led the Aggies in tackles for the second straight season with 85 last year. Appel enters 2005 with a chance to become the third Aggie and first defensive back to lead the team in tackles for three straight seasons (the others are All-American linebackers Ed Simonini, 1972-75 and Dat Nguyen, 1995-98).

Entering his fourth season as a starter, Appel has compiled 289 career tackles and is just nine tackles short of breaking the school record for tackles by a defensive back (297 by Brandon Jenning, 1996-99). Appel has 12 double-digit tackles games during his career, including a career-best 18 stops against Virginia Tech in 2003.

Ten semi-finalists for the Bednarik Award will be announced in October 2005 and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November 2005. The winner of the Bednarik Award will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN in December 2005. The formal presentation of the Bednarik Award will take place at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Banquet in February 2006.
