They are getting near the finish line. There are three riders ahead of the peloton but only by 40 seconds. It has swallowed up several of the riders that tried to escape. It looks like it may be a battle of the sprinters at the end as the escapees are getting caught. My goodness me this is very exciting isn't it?!

There is about 6 miles left in the race. Christophe Mengin is the lone escapee ahead of the peloton but it will probably catch him soon. Lance is obviously playing it safe today and staying with the peloton as expected.

About 2 1/2 miles left and Mengin is still fighting off the peloton. He is only ahead by 15 seconds but is making a valient effort. Could it be that this is one stage that will be won by one of the excapees? Hang onto your hats folks as we await with baited breath another trilling finish!

Mengin was caught up with the peloton and crashed on one of the last turns and several riders are involved including McEwen. Terrible news and bad luck. :(

Lorenzo Bernucci has won the stage. Several riders have been injured in the crash. :(

Mengin was actually in a good position to win the stage but the wet road caused him to crash.

I don't think Lance was involved in the crash. He has retained the yellow jersey.

Lance was held up by the crash but did not go down. He still retains the yellow jersey and there are no changes in the overall leader classifications.

Hopefully no one was seriously injured. Bad thing to happen especially with what happened in London today.

The crash caused caos among the usual winners but nothing can be taken from Bernucci who just happened to be in the right place at the right time today.

Lance's lead has lessoned today. Alexandre Vinokourov (one of his chief competitors) who got second today is now 53 seconds behind Lance in second place.

Vinokourov may have been able to overtake Mengin and got first place and gained even more seconds on Lance but he was slowed up by the crash and came in second. Hopefully the riders and everyone will be careful tomorrow because it is a dangerous stage especially with rain in the forecast there for tomorrow.

glad he (Lance) avoided the mishap or they really would have gained on his lead or possibly taken over...
