He was the great QB at Purdue and has played QB for the San Diego Chargers the past five years! I went to my HS reunion and found out his mother was Mina Akins now Brees of course. She was one class behind me. His grandfather was Coach Ray Akins who had great success at Gregory-Portland and did well at Freer High School before moving to GP. His uncle is Marty Akins who was a great QB at UT and his father is a Texas A&M graduate which may have been why he decided to go to Purdue. Mina also had a younger sister but I never knew her very well and I didn't know if she was Drew's mother. Mina moved away from Freer before her sophmore year and my junior year in high school. A great person and would have been a great athlete had girls' sports been more predominate then. She has never lost a tennis game with Drew and wanted him to be a tennis player but he chose football.

Yep! I got a picture of her in my 1964-65 hs school annual. Cat22 can verify it too because his father was in Mina's class until she left.

Yep that's true. My father and mother both remember her and her family well.

Cat do they remember the younger daughter's name. I think she was one grade behind Mina and two ahead of Marty but I am not sure.

Rumor around Austin is that Drew picked the Aggies, but Slocum didn't make an offer..........you guys know I'm an Ag fan, but R.C. would not have used him in the way Purdue did.

Hey Phil, my mom and dad said her name is Laura Sue. Mina dated my dad's cousin Richard Baldeschwiler all through school.

I remember that Cat22. I always kind of thought they would get married because they were so serious in high school but after high school of course they found other mates. I remember in the late 70s Richard coached for her father at G-P a few years and he and your father were great players at Freer HS. I think in the early 80s Richard got another job out of the teaching field and left coaching. That is the last I heard of him because he was in Sinton for jury duty after the change of jobs and I got to visit him briefly.

Oh and thanks for the reminder of Laura Sue. I think Mina's middle name was Sue too.

your probably right, R.C. was a great coach, but he wouldn't used the talent to it's extreme
