Closest thing to a celebrity I can think of out of my high school is Gary P. Nunn. Famous for writing and singing "London Homesick Blues" and leading The Lost Gonzo Band that backed up Jerry Jeff Walker back in the day.

No claims to fame that I can think of.......but my son did graduate in 2004 with Jessica McClure....the little girl who fell in the well back in 1987.

I know some of you youngsters won't remember that......but for 64 hours it kept the City of Midland glued to their TV's and the rescue was broadcast all across the United States and beyond.

Amy Acuff (Olympic high jumper and "Playboy" cover girl) Class of 1993.

Tom DeLay (controversial House majority leader) rumored to have been Class of 1965, but I don't know for sure if it's the same guy.

Roger Clemens was at my school for a little while. Former University of Houston and PGA golfer Billy Ray Brown graduated in 1981. One of my student coaches became "Baby-Face" Paige of the Harlem Globetrotters. Political celebrity Paul Begala graduated in 1979. Former Buffalo Bill Thurman Thomas was headed to my school but went to Willowridge when our school split to form the new school. Fox SW sportscaster Kevin Eschenfelder is another former Dulles Viking.

Ingleside's celebrities include the guy who invented the wishbone offense (coached here for a while before moving to the 40 Acres and showing them how to run it... forgot his name already but we have a street named after him so I'll figure it out and post it later) and former mayor Mark Crawford.:D

We've also had at least three of our citizens run for Congress in the last 10 or 15 years. Willie Vaden, Mark Crawford and one other guy all lost thier races.

A&E did an episode of "City Confidential" on Ingleside about the Crawford case. I saw it a few years ago. Not one of that town's brighter moments...BTW I did a little digging and it seems that yes, THE Tom DeLay is a Calallen grad. I'm not sure if that's one of our brighter moments or not...;)

LOL. I figured one of the Coastal Bend residents would get that one. You know, I had a few friends (who were all in HS when that happened) who were actually in that episode of "City Confidential." It's kind of wierd, because I grew up with his two sons and played LL baseball with them. Hell, Mark was our coach a couple of years. Great guy, would do anything for anybody... literally anything. ;) But seriously, I was floored when I found out it was true.

Good old fashioned murder. I might be a little foggy on the details, but he and a business associate of his killed a guy who was about to turn them over to the Feds for some illegal activities they were involved in. They whacked the dude, then buried him behind a shed or something Soprano-like...

His name was Emory Bellard. Started out straight out of college as an assistant coach at Aransas Pass, his alma mater, in the late 40's and early 50's, where he developed the earliest form of the bone. Took his first head coaching job here in Ingleside in 52 and refined it to the modern version, which was run here through the Wayne Wilsher years. That formation carried us to two title games in the 60's. He brought it to the college game when he was hired on to UT's staff in '67.

Born: Dec. 17, 1927, in Luling, Texas

High school: Aransas Pass

College: Southwest Texas State

High school coaching: Head coach from 1952 to '66 at Ingleside, Breckenridge and San Angelo Central. Won 1958 and '59 state titles at Breckenridge and 1966 crown at San Angelo Central. Went 41-22-5 at Spring Westfield from 1988 to '93.

College coaching: Assistant at Texas, 1967-71. Part of 1969 and '70 national championship teams. Went 48-27 as a head coach at Texas A&M from 1972 to '78, reaching three consecutive bowls before resigning midway through the '78 season after losing to Houston and Baylor by a combined score of 57-6. Went 37-42 at Mississippi State from 1979 to '85.

Actress/model Jerry Hall, who was once married to Mick Jagger, grew up in south Gonzales County near Smiley. I don't think she ever went to high school because she started modeling at a young age. She is now hosting the reality show "Kept" on VH1.

She still comes to town ever so often, especially near Christmas. One Christmas, a few years back, she and Nolan Ryan, who owns land in Gonzales Co., were at the H.E.B. in Gonzales at the same time grocery shopping. All hell broke loose....

BTW, I didn't mean to imply that the Funks are from S'water. They're from Umbarger(sp), close to Amarillo.

I have a close friend who was a bartender in the country club bar at Umbarger a number of years ago. She had the pleasure of waiting on them many times.
