Spring: A look back

Ten impressive achievements for Central Texas athletes from the spring semester:

•Westlake sophomore Kelsey Ditto finished second in the 400 freestyle at the U.S world championship swimming trials in Indianapolis, qualifying her for the world championship meet in July in Montreal. She'll be the youngest swimmer on the U.S. team.

•Bowie senior Michael Klueh won three gold medals in the Class 5A state swimming meet, breaking one state record.

•McNeil senior A.J. Abrams, the Central Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year, broke the school record for career points (2,559) and holds 14 other Mavericks records. He signed with the University of Texas.

•Connally senior Brandi Stanfield, headed to the University of North Texas, won state in the long jump and triple jump in the Class 4A state track and field meet.

•Lake Travis senior Amy Fowler won gold in the 1,600-meter run at state, the third straight year she has earned a state medal.

•Fredericksburg senior Hannah Maenius, a hearing-impaired distance runner, won gold in her final high school race, the Class 3A 1,600 meters at the state track meet. She was later honored by the Texas Legislature.

•Lexington captured the Class 2A team title at the state track and field meet, the first time the school has won a gold medal in any team sport.

•Led by guards Matt Caskey and Travis Clark, Salado reached the boys state basketball tournament for the first time, losing to eventual champion Kountze in a semifinal game.

•Thorndale rolled to a Class A state baseball championship, scoring 30 runs in two games at the state tournament.

•One year after La Grange won state in baseball, its softball team captured the Class 3A state championship.

Take five: Pigskin preview

Five things to look forward to when high school football season arrives this fall in Central Texas:

•One of the most dynamic quarterback-receiver combos in Texas remains intact. Last year, Akins' Steven Ortiz (81 catches, 1,226 yards) led the state in receiving during the regular season. Quarterback Joseph Skiff led the Eagles in passing and rushing as a junior, and also is one of the best kickers in the area.

•Pflugerville, Connally and Hendrickson will play on new AstroPlay surfaces instead of grass at their home fields.

•All-State quarterback Todd Reesing (3,126 yards passing) and All-Central Texas receiver Fred Robinson (86 catches, 1,450 yards, 19 TDs) are back for Lake Travis, which finished 8-3 last season. Reesing later was voted Class 4A's Player of the Year.

•Reagan and LBJ, two of the area's traditional powers before recent lean years, have regrouped with new coaches — Paul Darby at Reagan, Claude Mathis at LBJ.

•Westlake at Leander. Aug. 26. Tickets will go fast.
