‘Texas Football’ ranks handful of teams from Basin

Odessa American

The 46th edition of “Dave Campbell’s Texas Football,” which will be released June 28, picked last year’s District 2-2A runner-up Crane as the No. 14 team in its Class 2A Top 25 and District 8-1A champion McCamey as No. 25 in the Class 1A preseason predictions.
The Golden Cranes, also picked to win their district by “Texas Football,” return 13 starters (six offense, seven defense) from last year when they made the Division II area playoffs and finished 8-4.
McCamey lost quarterback Cannon McWilliams to graduation but the Badgers return 12 starters (seven offensive, five defensive), including running back Jamel Brown, who missed much of the season to injury.
In the 5A poll, Midland Lee was picked at No. 15 and Abilene High at No. 17. Despite being tabbed higher in the statewide rankings, the Rebels were actually predicted to finish behind Abilene High and Midland High in District 3-5A.
The magazine foresees Abilene High, which went undefeated in the regular season last season, as the district champion for a second consecutive season behind quarterback Taylor Potts, who was featured in the magazine as the Class 5A Coverboy.
Odessa High was predicted to finish in fourth place with Permian in fifth and Abilene Cooper last.
The high school preview section also includes a review of Houston Yates’ 1985 run to the state championship, which ended with a 37-0 win over Permian, and a top 10 of Class 5A teams from the last 20 years that contains two Permian state champions and the 1999 Midland Lee team.
In District 4-4A, Andrews is yet again seen as a playoff-bound team, according to Carl Padilla, who made the predictions for “Texas Football.” Plainview, which didn’t make the playoffs last season, is No. 19 in the Class 4A rankings and tagged as the District 4-4A frontrunner.
Monahans first-year coach Mickey Owens will look to lead the Loboes to a District 3-3A championship and “Texas Football” believes he will after they missed the playoffs last season.
