This is not 3-A, but I gotta give props to my 2-A alma mater...the Coahoma Bulldogettes.

They are making their 7th appearance at the State Championship game (which according to the paper is the most for any team in any class)!

Congrats girls!!

I'll cast my vote for 25-AAA.......four real good teams which made each other battle tested for playoffs and a run for the title.
Good luck Lady Necks!!!!

I'm with you, 18! , just as the Wharton Lady Tigers represented 25-AAA in Austin for the Final Four the last two years, the Lady Necks are this year carrying our district banner to "The Ship" in very determined fashion! GOOD LUCK!

I'm also with you 18, brotha!! But, I guess that you aren't getting any respect from the Necks because they talk about how tough this district was and never mention the fact that you lost 6-5 in WC and beat them 9-0 in Sweeny.

“No doubt in my mind that we have the toughest district in Region IV,” Murphy said. “Wharton has gone to the state tourney the last two years and we met Needville in the regional final. You definitely can’t say (we) are in a weak district.”

Why doesn't anyone state that the Sweeny game was the best wake up call they could have had all year? Almost makes me want to cheer against them, but my kids played for the Necks years ago and I graduated from there, so even though my loyality is a little split because I'm related to 18, but I still have to cheer for my alma mater.

OMG......let it go!!!!! I'm so sick of SWEENY people bringing that game up! Yes we got our A$$ kicked by them. Ok are you happy? But if anyone has seen us play they know that it was a very bad game for the girls!(my daughter pitched that game it was a very hard game for her) She went to Sweeny when she was younger and both parents grad. from Sweeny. She has lots of friends still in Sweeny and they can all tell you that was not her best showing. But she is very young and I hope she learned alot from that night. And we know Sweeny had a good team...just came up a few runs short. I'm very proud of the WC young team this year. They have did more than anyone every thought they could. And they have a lot of passion for the sport and each other. Hang in there Cami dont let a lil pneumonia slow you down. Go pitch your heart out! And Good Luck LADY NECKS put West Columbia on the map!

Yes that night in Sweeny served as a wakeup call for both the WC softball team and baseball team...both teams got beat that night by sweeny teams that played well. Those losses springboarded the softball team into a state tournament run and a regional semifinal run for the baseball team...
I'll give sweeny all the props, yes they beat two good teams in one night! GOOD JOB! but also, that was a long time ago and those YOUNG ladies are playing well when it counts...
GO LADY NECKS!!! We are rooting for you!!!

I'm tired of hearing about it also!! It was a good night for us, but it was over a month ago and I don't think we're still playing, but the Lady Necks are. Even though you are defending us Iknowalot, you are beating a dead horse now. I don't worry about respect right now, I think my record stands for itself. Now lets get behind our neighbors (I live in WC) and hope they continue to represent us well!!

One thing that I do have to say, is that when I was in town yesterday before I left for Austin and the TGCA committee meetings, is that I was really disappointed in the lack of signs wishing the Lady Necks good luck in Austin tomorrow. I hope that when I go through town this afternoon, that there are a lot of signs.

See ya' out in left field!!

My daughter, my dad and I are going to the LG game tonight! Might go back Saturday. I know quite a few kids from Brenham (4A) & Weimar (2A).

My wife is from the Grand Saline area, and she said the Van Vandals were an enormous rivalry in her high school days. Can't wait to see them play LG tonight. LET'S GO LADY LEPS!!!!! Brahma73 is pulling for you!

Whoever is going, better take plenty cash. I think the tickets are $10 per session (which I assume is a game) . I think that means they clear the stadium after each game and charge you again. Passes for the whole deal are about $60, I think. Sucks if you're only going to watch a couple of games.

UIL Staff must need pay raises.

I know for baseball you can watch 2-3 games for $10 bucks, of course, seating is better at Disck-Faulk than at McCombs field! I'd love to go tonight, but there is this little thing called work! ;) :D

I was up there on Wednesday for the TGCA selection committee meetings and will go back EARLY on Friday morning to my customary left field fence spot to watch Columbia and the rest of the tournament games.

Well, West Columbia is up to two signs supporting their girls.....the Chamber of Commerce and McDonald's. Hope Brazoria is supporting the girls better. There wasn't even a sign at the high school. Come on now -- support the girls!!!

RangerMom,

I was at the game, and it was a great one! I am proud to say that the team that won (Elysian Field Yellowjackets) is coached by a "Former Rattler" and my neice!! I don't get to see much softball, being a baseball mom and all, but it was very exciting. The Coahoma girls played great and showed alot of character as did their fans! Remember they are one of the top 4 teams in 2A in Texas so that's great in itself!!

I saw one more sign last night at Elmo's in WC, but there was a nice article in the Facts this morning that I read before leaving for Austin....

Columbia faithful bid farewell to team

The Facts

Published June 3, 2005

WEST COLUMBIA — Residents of West Columbia and Brazoria have been waiting for more than 30 years to send a Columbia High School team to the state championships.

Their wait ended Thursday.

An estimated 200 Lady Roughneck supporters gathered at First Capitol Park in West Columbia to cheer on the Columbia softball team as it departed for Austin to participate in the UIL Class 3A final four.

The sendoff, sponsored by the West Columbia Chamber of Commerce, drew county officials, mayors, school board members and loyal Lady ’Neck fans. The ceremony resembled a pep rally and allowed the community a chance to pay tribute to the first Columbia team in any sport to qualify for a state championship round since 1972.

It was in that year the Columbia girls track team brought home the Class 1A championship.

In 1969, the Roughneck football team played for the 3A state title, but was defeated by Brownwood, 34-16.

Columbia’s first appearance at a state championship, though, was in 1948, according to Columbia High Principal Steve Galloway. The girls basketball team made it to the final four that year, but was eliminated in the semifinal game.

While these accomplishments are part of Columbia’s history, fans at First Capitol Park on Thursday were anxious to see what the future holds for the school.

“I’m confident these girls will come back home as state champs,” Brazoria Mayor Ken Corley said. “Our entire city is aware the girls are in the playoffs and couldn’t be more proud of each and every one of them.”

West Columbia Mayor David Foster agreed, taking time at the sendoff to present the team with a certificate of recognition that reads, in part, “We are proud of the record you have earned and the fine publicity you have brought to our community by your inspired team play.”

He spoke for many of the fans gathered when he said, “This is a great day.”

Brazoria County Judge John Willy called the Lady Roughnecks ambassadors.

“You will do in the next few days — and have already done — more to bring recognition to Brazoria County than any of us elected officials have,” Willy said. “All of us in Brazoria County are proud of you.”

The team departed West Columbia behind an official police escort that had many team members showing surprised delight at all the attention directed toward them.

“I knew our community was behind us 100 percent,” Columbia softball coach Shelly Murphy said from Austin, “but I was overwhelmed with how many business people, school officials and townspeople came out to show their support.

“I think it touched the girls a lot.”

Any news out of Austin on this mornings game? I wonder if the time (8:30 a.m.) effected either team?
