Well I said all along that Melissa Verde at a private school was the best Pitcher in Texas. She again led her team to the State Championship game. It was close, a 3-2 victory over Houston St. Agnes.
One of their rare loses this year was to Bridge City-- who were hurling winning Freshman Pitcher Shandi Conner: Kelly lost by one point. Look for Kelly to search high and low for a Pitcher to replace Verde next year at Monsignor Kelly High School.
All-Tourney selections from Kelly were:
Lauren Parker, Catcher, a Senior (Lauren was an All-State SS for PN-G as a Junior)
Tiffany Autry, 2nd base, a Junior
Jackie Nortman, SS, a Senior
Melissa Verde, Pitcher, a Senior
It was a sweet victory situation for Verde and Jackie Nortman they had lost the final game for the Championship as Freshman three years ago. Jackie Nortman sprinted from second base for the winning run on a Melissa Verde single to left to break a 2-2 stalemate.
Melissa Verde has had a great career thusfar, she also was instrumental in pitching the Beaumont Blast Gold to a second place finish in the nation; in a American Fastpitch Association National Tournament that hosted 142 of the top 18 & U teams from across the USA. The biggest softball event will again be held at Ford Park in Beaumont this summer. If you want to see all the college scouts in recruiting mode come to this great extravangaza!
