Snyder leads Class 3A girls state golf tourney
Sweetwater stands in 3rd

A pair of Big Country teams will head into today's final round of the University Interscholastic League Class 3A girls state golf tournament just a chip shot away from the state title.

The girls from Snyder High School are tied for the lead after shooting an opening round 336 Thursday at Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin. The Sweetwater High School girls are in second place, two strokes back of the Lady Tigers and Yoakum's A squad.

''We're thrilled just to be two out of it,'' said Sweetwater girls golf coach Carola Martin. ''We will be paired with Snyder and Yoakum tomorrow, so we'll know exactly what happens. It'll be serious drama.''

While the Sweetwater girls overall are in third place, the Lady Mustangs' Brittany Mercer carded a 76 on Thursday, good enough for second place in the individual medalist competition. Teammate Kelly Rainbolt was in a three-way tie for third place with a 77.

Shannon Mangis led Snyder with a 79, while Emily Kvinta from Yoakum A led overall with a 72.

This is the Sweetwater girls' first trip to state since 1981, Martin said.

Snyder athletic director Chad Rogers said the Lady Tigers are making their 12th straight trip to state.

Martin said her team will face a tough road today where mistakes must be kept to a minimum.

''I believe it will come down to the last hole, like it did at regional,'' Martin said, adding that Sweetwater finished second to Snyder by a stroke at regional.

Martin said her girls were happy with the first day's rounds, but a hard day of golf still waits.

''A lot of smiles,'' Martin said about her Lady Mustangs' reaction when the team scores were posted. ''They weren't jumping up or down or anything - just a lot of smiles.

''They know what they have to shoot tomorrow,'' Martin said. ''There really is no room for error.''

With the tight race at the top, Martin said her girls will need to shoot in the 330s again to have a chance at winning a medal.

''At regionals, we shot 331 and 332,'' Martin said. ''I think if we shoot that again, that'll bring good things.''
